Nissan Patrol GU3 (2003) ST 4.8 dual fuel

Good Points
Love the amount of flex. Even though it doesn't have the high tech traction aids of more modern 4WDs, this thing feels so planted. Great LSD. Huge range of aftermarket goodies available.

Bad Points
Doesn't handle high speed dirt roads like a IFS/IRS vehicle. But that's the tradeoff having solid axles.

What mods have you done?
16" steel ROH rims.
Tyres - 33" Hankook MT.
Marks Adaptors Speedo correction device.
Headunit (Chinese), with GPS and reversing camera.
GME UHF.
Second battery.
2.2 metre steel rack.
Awning.
Ozbar rear bar, with tyre carrier and double jerry carrier.
Safari Snorkel (had to add a 'balancing pipe between the lpg mixer and the inlet to the airbox).
ARB side steps and brush rails.
ARB Deluxe bull bar.
Runva winch.
2" lift. Dobinson coils and Tough Dog foam cell shocks. ARB rear sway bar link extension brackets.
Front e-locker.
4.11 diff gears.
Brown Davis 70L subtank.

What mods are on the list to do?
Bash Plates.
Extended diff breathers (Patrols come standard with breathers going into guard and rear cross member).
auxiliary sockets to be sorted.
Light weight aluminium frame and plastic containers for rear storage.
Possibly TC lockup kit.

Why did you buy this vehicle?
I've been coveting the Patrol for some time:)

How often do you go offroad?
Probably once every few of weeks

Grandpa spec.

Good truck and list of mods coming up. Make sure you emphasize that they seal the Safari snorkel correctly for water proofing and test it ASAP when you get home. The kids mounting them are generally care free if get my drift.

Have you sold the 3:55's I might be interested?

Yeah, I'll have to check the snorkel;) What's the best way to do that? Someone mentioned to cover the inlet..and if the engine stalls, it's sealed. But someone else said that he tried that and ended up sucking silicon into his airbox. buggered if I know.

Re the 3.55 gears. I won't be swapping those out for sometime. I'll do that when I get locker/s...probably another year. Just get on the Patrol forum. Guys can't give them away:)

Hey Andrew, looking good! I thought they do a smoke test on the snorkel?

PS a front locker with the limo in the rear will get you most places. :)

Bit of an update...

I've been having problems with the gas converter freezing on cold mornings (before engine warms). And hard start on petrol when warm. So decided to take it to a new mechanic I found (LPG specialist) who has a tone of test equipment.

He hooked up a gas analyser up to the exhaust and also checked the codes. It was running horribly rich, so out came the injectors. They were gummed up. He tried to clean them in his ultrasonic bath. Two were beyond cleaning and were partially jammed open! And the rest were pretty average. So I ordered some reco ones from Patrol Parts which were fitted up (twice, as he had to pull them out again for cleaning). The fuel rail had rust through it, so that went in an acid bath. The fuel pressure regulator was buggered, so that was replaced, and the same with the MAF sensor.

The gas converter was half full of oil. Which is apparently pretty normal due to oil vapor accumulating in the converter over time (been in since new). So new converter. Gas re-tuned.

So the end result the Patrol now starts first crank. Doesn't drink as much as the Queen Mary. And no more freezing converter;) Drives like brand new;)

The lpg system is surprisingly simple. $280 for a new converter (to replace the 13yo one), and all fixed. I think the previous owner must have rarely used petrol and even run it dry (there was rust in the fuel rail). And old e10 petrol doesn't help, as it absorbs water, leading to rust (rust in tank). I also got him to fit a Flashlube kit to keep the top end of the engine lubricated. I'm more than likely going to bring forward the decision to replace the existing (rusty) sub-tank with a long range one.

I went out for a drive yesterday with my club. Started off the day doing the wombat holes near zigzag (newnes). Just youtube zigzag wombat holes. I was a bit nervous when all the other cars (mostly Pootrols) turned up with lockers except me! Anyway, I did most of the run flexing like a champ;) Then got hung up on a cross axle ledge and couldn't keep 4 wheels on the ground. I went at it a bit to hard to try and pop the back wheels over, the rear spun sideways on the step, and slammed into the embankment:( Anyway I scratched my shiny new ozbar..there's also a small indentation. I was starting to regret buying that thing, but I'm sure glad I bought it now! The rear quarter would have been a mess otherwise.

Anyway, I did better than one of the guys in a GQ Patrol. He snapped a swaybar, which took out an air locker hose, causing oil to spew out his diff;(

When mostly running gas, which is a dry fuel, the valves don't get much in the way of lubrication. The flashlube kits injects a lubricant into the inlet manifold making its way into the upper cylinders.
