WOW! What a response!
Might have to change the title of this thread...
Awesome feedback guys. Thanks a heap!
I only got the Rocky in December. Its an F78, which puts it at the very rare end of the scale. I had to get the rear diff rebuilt - PO just let the seal leak. Pinion bearing went. Not too much damage, but $2.5k all up with brakes. Brake master cylinder and wheel cylinders HAD to come from the UK. They were not physically available here in OZ. Because they're so rare, I could find none being wrecked in all of Australia.
I saw a copy of the F78 & F73 workshop manual go for $280 on eBay. There are no digital copies available anywhere online. The manual for other Rockies covers a lot, but not all of what I need.
There is a pretty decent Facebook community of Daihatsu 4wd owners. Most of em own Feroza's, but there are a couple of Rocky drivers.
Since I got it, I have built a shelf, and installed a 40l Engel. It needs new suspension. I can get a 3" lifted set of coils for the rear, and upgraded torsion bars for the front. Just not sure if the 3" lift will be too much for the CV's and universal joints. I know 2" is fine... its a hard decision. I would rather have more clearance - who wouldnt?!
Other than a few initial teething problems with the diff, the vehicle is amazing. No rust, no dents (except the ones I have already put in while out bush) good paint. The engine is great. 318xxxkm now. I have replaced all of the fluids and filters. Air con is good. The gearbox is loud at 85 onwards, but I have read that is a common issue, and apart from the sound, there is no problem. The stereo drowns it out. About 9.1l/100km, which is pretty bloody good. Turbo kicks in at around 2,000 RPM. That is ok, as its a good range to sit in while 4wd is engaged. =50km/h in 3rd on the beach. Low range is a very nice speed, and could deadset pull a house down. I havent even had to use half of what it has to give.
I have had to learn a fair bit about the vehicle since I got it. I have already given it a fair workout, and it is a very capable vehicle. Beach work is no problem. I have been stuck in mud (clearance) and have had wheels off the ground. I was going to buy an ex-army 110 Defender, but am happy with my decision to buy the Rocky. After a few upgrades including a snorkel, I dont think there is anywhere my mates could go that I could not. I actually reckon I could go further than most of them.
Again, Thanks heaps for the support guys.
