Well done mate try all avenues, you never know where the work will come from!

Good to see you are looking for work.

Can I suggest you look for a college we have them up here where you go one month of school and then one month at a workplace. It takes time off your trade, gets you year 11 & 12 qual and does some of your tafe training,

Cheers

Victoria has similar programs where you study half time, work half time and get your VCE ( or whatever it is called these days ). As Yobbo said, it also takes time off your training time. Try one of the local TAFE's

The only advice I can give you Mark is, if things don't pan out consider finishing School.
Good luck with your search.

He knows i wont let him leave school unless he has a real job... not just a maccas job... i am a pretty easy going mum and have set those rules .. He is really keen on working and is a good worker but its a hard world out there

I'm hearing you, I have a 16 year old who has his heart set on a boiler making apprenticeship at the end of the year, so I'm going through the same things at the moment, only thing different is he's been told by the company he did his work experience with if they hire an apprentice the job is his.
We have told him that he needs to continue to work hard to achieve his goals.

Hey Mark

Best thing to do is go and ask around your local area, tell them you are looking for an apprenticeship and wondering whether they are looking for an apprentice for next year. If yes then see whether you could help out over the weekends for the rest of this year to see whether you like the job. Bonus for them in that they have another pair of hands and bonus for you in that you get some cash

You might get some knock backs but I can tell you enthusiasm and a go get em attitude will put you head and shoulders above 90% of the others looking

I know when we are looking for staff - those that approach us get the first interviews

Like everyone else has said good luck but in this world you tend to make your own.

Worst case stay at school and bludge off mum for another year or two who knows Dr Mark has a nice ring to it

That is what employers are after Mark people who make an effort, u will find work soon enough with the right attitude, until then do as mum says and stay at school, remember they are some of the best years of your life.

Hey Mark

One thing I would like to add, and i appreciate it maybe hard at 16 to figure this one out, but do you want to do a trade because you have some level of passion for a particualr trade or do you simply really like working with your hands?

The reason i ask is because its often the case that young people take up a trade simply to get out of doing high school. Personally IMHO i think that is not a good reason to take up a trade.

Also in this day and age you will have a more opportunities to gain an apprenticeship if you have completed year 12.

If all else fails the main thing is you are doing "something" rather than "nothing".

Cheers

Justin

PS: it took me until i was 25 to figure out what i wanted to do, still not 100% sure now but i at least have some education and experience behind me that gives me quite a lot of opportunities if i decided to change jobs/careers again.

Cheers

he is passionate about building things... i will add a pic of one item he has made ... I as a mother will not stop him from getting an apprenticeship if one is offered to him but will not let him leave for a job with no future... i dont believe that by doing yr 12 it makes it easier to get an apprenticeship.. i believe its about how mature and how you conduct yourself is to wether you get one or not .

My brother is a teacher and has seen that some of the students are not suited to school life and are ready for work. I like the fly making bench and he has a talent for wood work. I hope someone can help him achieve his goal. I was an apprentice once (many years ago) and now I work from home repairing computers and software overseas. Not bad for a TV repair person.

Get out the yellow pages and look for builders, cabinet makers and other trades he is interested in and contact them. Make sure some of his handy work are pictured in the resume. Talent is important but moving forward and looking for the job is hard but is rewarding, not let any bumps stop you achieving your dream. Dreams can take you many places. My nephew is a plumber and has worked overseas in some great locations and still is living his dream.

If he did make that fly vice, then maybe a trade as a fitter and turner, toolmaker or as a boilermaker might best suit his talents. That looks like a very well made and thought out device. It shows pride in fit and finish, and shows good engineering talents. I think doing yr12 is a personal choice, I have seen that sometimes doing yr12 makes someone too old for a lot of traditional apprenticeships. A lot of employers like them a bit younger for the cheaper wages.

As for finding what to do, I have 3 qualifications, A Marine Engineer, A Spray Painter (automotive) and also have my Advanced Diploma in Computer Systems Engineering. Beleive it or not, I am looking at getting my truck license, and doing that. I think I am more suited for that working life, rather than I.T., as most people tell me (I am 140Kg, Tattoo's etc). So, you are never too old to "change your mind"......:D:D:D

some thing to consider is Pre-apprecticeship trading (if it still exists) at TAFE. I did it and opened my job horizons up. I was offered a job as a fitter and turner, electrical and technical (radio and TV) but I did all the other areas too which has come in handy. I did wood and metal work, auto mechanic and electrician which has helped to rewire and repair my vehicles over all the years.

I had to go back to college recently and did a management diploma and you are never to old to change directions like centaur said.

Spot on. My 18yr old missed out on a fitting and turning apprenticeship because the winning applicant had done a pre-apprenticeship course. My son is currently doing a Cert II in Engineering at Gippsland TAFE. Pitty he can't find a part time job!
