At the first hint that they were looking at camera footage through the main routes then you would do it straight away, if it was later then when you saw recent reports on the media????

Yes, and the cops must have known something or followed him. It's not exactly a high traffic stake out area for cops.
I dunno, but if that was me, I'd have rented a cheap 4wd to take there, not a camo brown GU with a blue engine bay.

I expect the captain might soon be getting a free return trip to the Wonnangatta Valley and surrounds where he might be asked to do a bit of guiding to the constabulary's sight seeing party.

Why would you go back to a crime scene 12 months later when police have no leads?
Arrested without charge.
They must know something like it is the actual vehicle or else they wouldn't have gone that far.

The Australian is reporting that they were following him. When they saw where he was heading they sent out 2 helicopters of SOG cops to the area.
