So, luckily (or unluckily) I was in Melbourne yesterday just knocking off work to see the amazing thunderstorms. It was absolute chaos, driving down Arden St in North Melbourne I saw cars completely underwater with just their roof being the only part unsubmerged! A number of times I had to to U-turns down main roads as the water was just too deep. What completely perplexed me was the number of idiotic people trying to drive through these waters in standard Fords and Holdens etc. I would have counted at least 100 cars broken down in 3 or 4 feet of water (sometimes more) in the middle of major roads. People obviously have no respect for what water can do to a vehicle. I was not in my 4WD but even if I was, snorkel and all, most of the flooding a saw would have still been to deep to cross. The Flemington drains had flooded out of their watercourse onto main roads. The currents in these parts I reckon would have been not unlike a serious water crossing in the high country. It was that bad.
I hope nobody was out wheeling yesterday when these storms hit, especially north of Melbourne or in the Latrobe Valley. I saw a few 4WDs coming back into Melbourne this morning Via the freeways, covered in mud, Motorbikes in the trays and broken winches (the cables were all wrapped around their bullbars). Would have made for some dangerous (but interesting) time in the bush.
