Have owned both a camper trailer(old cub) and a caravan in the past. Back to tent/swag etc now, untill
I build the camper I want. Here's a pic of the van we towed around Australia for 20 months;
W.jpg

It was a Scenic, their yard is in Dandenong. 21' long with bunks one end for the boys, and all the usual
accessories etc. Not a bad van, well made and very easy to tow and back up.

I have owned 2 caravans 1 being off road, 2 camper trailers 1 being a cheap off road and the other being an expensive off road, 30sec tent, black wolf turbo tent, swag.
slept in the back of the car.
I like the Caravan on extended trips with my wife, its easy and we have all the mod cons, but not off road with it, couple of km down a dirt road is as far off road i take it.
When i am away with the guys or off road with the misses, swag or tent i like.

Your mate Russell Coight would have a few good camping ideas wouldn't he ?

Towed a 27footer around for 5 years. Clocked up 250,000km. Said never again!!! Settled down in a house for a while and then bought an Offroad bush trailer....but times change and 10 years later the missus wants something better. So next week we will buy an old Poptop and make it bush-ready with a Treg hitch, springover, bigger tyres and air bags

I've got an old Statesman 12 foot poptop. It was the only van we could find that matched the weight restrictions of the jeep at the time. It has a full length annexe with walls so there is plenty of room for the 2 of us. We only get away in it 2 weeks a year so I can't justify spending a lot of money on a driveway ornament. My wife doesn't do the camping thing so when I'm out with the club I use a swag.

Our current van is an upgrade from a 12' bondwood, which started to self distruct after a quick trip to Cooper Pedy, Flouro Peninsula SA, broken windows, roof hatch (forgot to close it) etc. Also Jo driving and hitting cattle grids at 120kph didn't help ( company car at that time)
We now have a 20"Pedigree, cafe seating, big fridge, island bed, full annex and all the gear to make it comfortable, sat dish, solar panels (portable), etc. We have done a 10,000klm outback NSW & QLD trip with it as well as several shorter ones.
The accessories go in the CT when we go off road, that's our style of camping, I like comfort. No more camping in tents.

my camper

I have a southerncross camper trailer 4x4 model 03 model with annex sides and fly front.
Bought it to take the wife and my 2boys out and about in a bit of luxury. It has been to NT and all around and hasn't let me down yet.

caravan

We have been out and about in a 17.5 foot Majestic off road van wit all the bells etc , can stay out for about a week fishing or in the bush with out any trouble.
We started with the tent idea years ago progressed to the camper trailer but this is the way to go with the off roader.
Did the great central middle of last year and out to the painted desert etc .A great trip with no hassles ,the extra luxuries make travel and camping just great.

We have an old Chesney camper trailer. picked it up for a bargain out of the trading post about 12 months ago. it was built around 1975. it is old but everything still works fine, (apart from the winch and a few upright struts and a few small holes in the canvas, and the flat tires and a few holes in the fibreglass roof) LOL.
All since replaced or fixed. We went cheap to start with for our first foray into the caravan/camping world incase we didnt enjoy it so much. Plus with an older van, it doesnt worry us too much if it gets a bit knocked around. (the kids seem to take charge in that department). But may upgrade to something a bit more modern soon as we all enjoy getting out very much. Anyway, does anyone else have a similar van? Don't seem to come across too many Chesneys these days.

5 years back had a 1978 Millard pop top. A cow to tow. had a mind of its own. Did the cheap Camper Tent/Trailer -> Good fun. Then in 2009 got a 6 month old Jayco Swan. Very nice. Sold it last week and picked up a Brand New Jayco Expanda Outback 16-49-2 today. Love it already.
Towing it with the Bravo requires patience.

I own a Majestic model Navigator .
We purchased 2 nd hand about 4 years ago and it's a full off road with ensuit 18 ft.

We started with tents migrated to off road camper trailer and now the van ,the best thing we have done. We can camp out for a week and be self maintained .

Tow the unit with a 4.2 Nissan TD patrol ute.

As with everyone we started of with a variety of different tents. Then 2 yrs ago we picked up a 12 yr old Jayco Flite Off-road. So far we've taken it almost everywhere with us and it hasn't broken anything major yet (and no the water tank hoses, wheel bearings, wheel bearing caps, 1000 screws, steps and some funny trim strip under the front don't count).
But shortly we are going to sell it as it's just a bit to big and cumbersome for what we want, being outback or off-road touring. So shortly we should be the proud owners of a (insert brand name here) camper trailer with most of the bells and whistles.
<---- and yeah thats what you do when you lose part of a wheel bearing in the desert....
