Where to (and not to) go in Tassie?

Hey all,

im setting up for a trip to Tassie for about 4 weeks after xmas and through Jan. Just thought i would throw it out to anyone who has been there for a bit of a heads up to your fave and not so fave spots and things to do.

I have been to tassie before and done most of the main things so would like a few more obscure places to see... the only plan so far is to do the overland track again, a great trek for anyone who is into a bit of walking.

So if anyone has any suggested sites, trails or camping spots, i would love to hear them...

Hi Dazz, we're also planning a trip to Tassie the same time for 4 weeks and don't know anything about the area. Due to a sickness in the family we may have to rethink the destination. We haven't booked the boat because of this so if we can't get on when we want we will spend 4 weeks in the Alps again :) Such a beautiful part of Australia.

Gday Mark,

Yeah we love the high country also, such a nice place to go and vic parks do alot better job than NSW parks and wildlife (DWE now i think). just goto watch those flys, they can pick you up and carry you away over that time of year!

I would jump on that boat if you are still considering the tassie trip... i booked a while back and have tried to change some dates but cant cause they are booked out. If your over 2.1m high, its makes it hard too cause there is only a certain amount of room "over height"...

This is my problem: I can't book the boat yet due to this particular terminal illness (not me). Sounds like I could be in trouble getting on the boat anyway as i'm 2.5 high and 13.5 long with the Kimberly.

We've been looking foward to this trip for 12 months but I guess family first. I've been told that if we are happy to hang around in Melbourne for up to a couple of days we would probably get on a standby trip. I guess thats what we may have to do.

We lived in Tassie for about 12 months and travelled most of it. The North West Coast is great for a trip but make sure you dont go on you own and best to take someone local with you Quick sand is extream up there many many vehicals lost up there nice area though. Take notice of the warning signs up there too (learnt this the hard way). If you can get over to Brunny Island really nice there too and some great tracks too. there is a book i think off the top of my head is called 4x4 Tasmaina it has all the tracks in Tassie in it and gives you the history and information on the track eg permits required etc and grades it too.

Sorry to hear about that Mark. Sounds like standby is the go, but like you said could be hard with your camper.

Maybe sort out the high country trip for this year?? Give me a PM if you sort out the boat anytime soon, might be able to do a trail...

As Kiwijaz said, the west coast of Tassie is awesome, especially for great 4wding...:D Again as he said, is not a place to go without at least one other vehicle & the book he is referring to is; Chris Boden's 'Off road Tasmania'. As well as all the tracks, it has diffuculty ratings along with where you need a permit & where to get them etc etc.

Anymore info required, just yell out.

I'll put up a few pics from our trip if I can work out how...

Thanks allanmac and kiwijaz...

i will try and track down the book to give me a bit of a head start. Ive heard the NW is a good place to go, i got a mate in Burnie so im planning on heading through there then heading south.

some pics would be great if you can get them up. Also any particular bush camping spot to recoomend? some names or even better GPS locations would be tops!

Thanks again guys.

Yea, i will give you a call if we get the standby. The book Jaz is referring to is able to be purchased online here Off-road Tasmania Guidebook or you can get it on the boat over.

i was also planning a trip to tas in jan, i unfortunetly have a slow 3.4 d with big tyres so the sand is really not a good option for me, id been looking for bush trks.

i will def. be going to do saw back trk, they say its the best 4x4 rainforest trk in aust. so i have to see it to belive it as the otways has quite a few that would be hard to beat. you do need a permit and i heard it leads you to an old ghost town called adamsfield.

Strahan on the west coast. Head out west from town on the Ocean Beach Road. Park on the beach with the 30 or so other 4B's who have also made their way out there. Pull out the folding chairs, Boags/wine/Tasmanian cheese/whatevertakesyourfancy and watch the sun go down. Other than that, point your nose in any direction and you wont be disappointed. Been down there several times, the last in April this year. Had several "interesting" boat trips across Bass Straight but the last was a beauty. Seeing giant walls of water crashing across the stern is burnt in my memory, the whole ship violently shaking, feeling as though we where hitting solid walls of water. We wheren't bobbing up and down over the waves, we were barreling down mountains and up the other side. People spewing all over the place and moans and growns from those who thought impending death was near, me included. Anyway have a good trip :D

Strahan sounds tops, i'll stick it on the map for working out the route.

Ha the boat is going to be fun, I should be ok growing up on the water, but my mrs gets sea sick in the bath! :D i'll definately hear about it if the seas are rough...
