What's between Melbourne and Perth?

I have been daydreaming about doing a run from Melbourne to Perth and back one day. The current plan is to do East to west inland visiting Woomera & Maralinga along the way then take the coast on the way back.

Has anyone got any tips or suggestions of where to visit along the way?

What's between Melbourne and Perth? About 1000Km's of civilisation, 1500 odd km's of semi arid desert and another 1500km of rural farmland.

There is so much to see, it all depends on how much time you can devote to it. You can do it in 3 days or 3 months. What to see depends upon your timeframe.

The Flinders with a little detour, SA head of the bight and clifs along to the border, then WA Nuytsland and Baxter Cliffs, and the old Tele Tk to Israelite Bay and beyond to Esperance.

Count on averaging pretty slow speeds on the inland route depending on which inland route.you take. Some of them will be 20-40kph.

Grampians, Lincoln and coffin bay, israelite Bay, Esperance, Bremer Bay, peaceful Bay. That was roughly my last trip but it wasn't quick so I did a bit of back n forth and exploring. And make sure you eat all the fresh oysters along SA coast.

The last roadhouse before Norseman (& bypass Norseman), Balladonia Raodhouse, take the dirt road on the left (due South) opposite the Roadhouse and follow it through to Esperance. You can get down to the beach, at Esperance, then decide which way you wish to take up to Perth. It will take you past some old homestead and Mt Ragged ?I thinki that's what it's called. There are a couple of large granite outcrops to the East of the track, with a dam and ok place to camp, if you know where to look
This is the entry to the road South to Esperance. https://goo.gl/maps/HArenYGgeP62

@Dune the diagonal road saw to Esperance is Parmango Rd, and probably Old Deralinya homestead you mentioned ?
It’s a nice drive we came back up that way after driving the cliffs along through Nuytsland, then back to Cocklebiddy and up to the Pilbara.
I took some video of the homestead, we camped there under the workshop verandah.
