We have a 6 person Roman tent,it has 2 seperate rooms the larger room at the back section could sleep 4adults comfortably and the front smaller room could sleep 2adults comfortably.
Although there's only my 2boys,my wife and I we find the extra room is handy for keeping our bags of clothes, food and othe bits and pieces in that dont need to come on the day trips we do.
It only takes my wife and I 10 mins to set up,has the bucket style floor, all the seams are glued and double stitched, good ventilation, packs up reasonably small and wieghs about 10-12 kg's.
We paid $260.00 for our tent 2 yrs ago and love it.
We have a campertrailer we also use, just depends on what sort of trip and destination as to what we take.

cheers,
Brian.

Looking for a good 4 - 5 person tent myself, for family 4wd trips.
Just me, the missus, and daughter occassionally, but nice to have some room !

I really like the look of the touring tents, they look fast to setup, and you can get the side adaptors to enable use with no centre pole required.
Products - Discount Camping Australia scroll down a bit . . .

Trouble with tourers is it looks like little protection from weather if it rains / blows in at the sides.
A small vestibule would be nice.

Hmmm, just took a better look at the Outdoor Connection website, the optional side walls look the go (check the Cooper with these fitted).
Cooper
Both the Tanbar and Cooper also have the centre pole-free optional side support poles.

You can get zip on awnings to go with them & if you have a mate like I have with an industrial sewing machine that can add velcro edges you can add curtains.

My Wagon has an awning too which side curtains can be added to & it & the tent can be joined together. Here are a few of the MANY combinations we can use (Including TV!!!- $50 tuner on the Laptop- Antenna fits in the second spare tyre on the roof rack BTW)
(I have used an ordinary Sewing Machine to add velcro edges too)

Awesome Bill.
I reckon I'll go with a good value canvas tourer, and add the side protection one side at least.

Have emailed a couple of places about the Tanbar with internal side pole and side awning wall(s) options.

For us it depends where and who is going. If the family, and not real rough 4wding, take the camper, if can't take that a two room dome type tent, or if just me a three man dome tent. Have thought about a swag, but thought my farts would kill me........
Cheers,
Andrew.

It doesn't look like it but there is only one awning & two curtains of around 2 mtrs Sqr in the whole setup.
The curtains are identical with 2 "Fluffy" & one "Hook" velcro edges originally made to go on the side of the Vehicle awning but I quickly realised they would fit both & I could join them together. The edges of the Tent awning & Vehicle awning have 2" "Hook" all round.

(1) They can be used as a wind break for a quick overnight (Ularu to Kalgoorlie)

(2) Or FULL shelter for places like Port Lincoln (I have heard it's been known to RAIN & BLOW there!)

(3) Dining Room & Kitchen from the Bedroom.:D

We recently sold our campertrailer & have gone back to tents. We have Oztrail 3 room dome tent which is about 6 years old. Set it up in the back yard for my kids & their mates sleep over a few months back & the cat decided he wanted in. Climbed up tent & put holes in it everwhere. Looking for replacement & found 1 I like in Annaconda but it weighs 50 kgs. My guess is that it would take 20 mins to set up, which doesn't bother me much.

My brother (345 Chippy) has awesome set up which he calls, "A trailer for camping", which is his to explain if he so chooses.

I also have a small dome tent for short overnight stays for just the kids & I. Need the one mentioned above to keep the Mrs happy. All this tent & camping reading is giving me itchy feet.

G'day Paul . . . well you'll see a few posts above that I was in the market.

After checking out the weights and packed sizes of the Outdoor Connection Cooper and Danbar tourers at local stores here in SA, I found that they weren't for me.
Weights were up over of 19 and 27.5kg respectively, packed sizes 105 x 90 x 12 cm and larger again for Tanbar.

Ended up with the Outdoor Connection Escape 6 (6 person) floor 305 x 305cm and height a reasonable 1.9m (internal probably 1.8). It weights only 14.5kg and small packed size 72 x 25 x 25cm.

Escape 6

Haven't used it yet, but will post review when I do get out with family again . . . next trip is July and fellas only trip, and that will be lightweight travel (no tent).

From the looks though, and I saw the Escape 4 setup in local store, the great extended vestibule covers the door very well, great for poor weather entry.
With a dome, you just have to guy out for support if there might be some wind.

I really like those protected (and large) lower windows for ventilation at ground level.
Most of the OC tents have these.

Oh, watch pricing online too.
I was tempted with one store online, found the Escape 6 online for $250 or so (they state marked DOWN from $300), my local camping store had it for $219.

Yeah true re wind and domes spinyeel, why I mentioned guying it well if you expect any wind.

Actually it has the extra large area of front vestubile and the way it is designed, plus those large low windows . . . if these were also pegged out, that would all help support it fairly well . . . not sure what to do about the cat though, maybe a Rotty tied up out front ?

My daughter's cat climbed all over my canvas cabin tent when I was weathering it in the back yard.:eek: A couple of soak and dry cycles closed up all of the holes. Amazing stuff canvas.:The cat doesn't realize how close he came to a violent death.:D

Guys.....

We ended up going with one a new Touring Tent out buy Darche. It's called the Safari Ext Touring tent. It will suit our family of 5 with a weight of 24kgs and comes with the side pole kit (I will find a suitable single pole as well for even a quicker setup time).
I looked at the Tanbar & had actually ordered one but it never came & I was eventaully told that there was another design fault in them.....This suitable me fine as when I saw a Tanbar there was a couple of things I didn't like.... 1. The stuff the floor was made out of (that tartp type of material) 2. The floor didn't go up the sides of the tent which to me could lead to water problems in heavy rain.
So I was glad when I found one of these new Darche Tents: DARCHE Outdoor Gear

Not bad Rob, those zip down gussetted windows would keep rain out fine, and good ventilation down low . . . the only thing I found with tourers (besides the higher weight and larger packed sizes) was that front awning / door design.

No protection at all in inclement weather for access.
Maybe (if tourers owenrs wanted to) a piece of triangle ripstop could be velcroed into one or both sides of the door to the tent, like the optional side awning on the Cooper / Danbar tents ? See pic here of the Cooper with optional side awnings shown . . .
These can velcro right down the side edge of the tent.

I dunno, maybe I've been a bushwalker too long, these things are possibly more important in those circumstances.
When I take family bush in the 4WD, I try to keep it to decent weather, otherwise they could be miserable.

just picked up a Roman 2 man dome, looks like a good little unit to use, haven't had a chance to set it up yet. 2.3m long which is good for the mattresses etc and small to pack up and fit in the storage drawers for when it's just me going away

I have a oztent for the good lady and I, which is soooo quick and easy to put up.
You are set up in no time and relaxing around the fire with a cold one before you know it!

If im by myself though and swagging it, the Redgum Burke and Wills swag does the job nicely :)
