A set of Xbull recovery tracks from Ebay for $80, an air compressor, tire gauge, a couple of pies from the bakery and get out there and enjoy.
I got a set of Xbull a few yrs ago under $100 bucks tried them out in the sand under my 3t patrol they work well haven't used them in anger yet.

Was going to get some Muputrax yrs ago but haven't done that they're pretty versatile. http://www.muputrax.com.au/

I use a set like that, very sturdy old school style of recovery board. Just be careful when they are old and beat up because they can give splinters.

If you only need the recovery boards without the accessories, it is just made out of FRP walkway grating with embedded grit. Cheap to buy but they charge a lot to cut it, if you can get some offcuts and cut them into size yourself you can get a real good deal.

As for what mods to do to make the Hilux more capable, I would 100% do lockers before putting on bigger tyres or anything else.
They basically double the capability, you might realise you don't even need bigger tyres after fitting them.

Amazing what you can do with an old Hilux on 33s and lockers, check out this video where one does 6 stage with no problem (also has reduction gears).
