Come on now......we're not talking about what you own, but what you think is the most capable in std form for touring and playing, so you have to have good fuel range, upwards of 900km, plenty of room, good towing ability, comfortable to drive, ect.
Click on the poll also (I made it a split thread so people can comment on this one and vote on the other) so that we can keep track of tallies, you can choose mutiple times in the poll also, as some vehicles are very close in capability.

Well I would have to say The Prado 150 series in standard for would eat the rest up. This is not because i'm biased in my 120 series Prado VX but it is fact. The Kakadu Prado in its standard form has traction control and anyone that has seen mine in action can attest to the fact it is awsome, The 150 has under guard cameras showing wheel placement, a front downward pointing camera, reversing camera, downhill assist and ABS. That just for the weekend playing. For on/off the road touring you also get radar controlled cruise control and the ride is sensational. BUT the new Prado is running out for around $90,000.

May I then suggest a 2nd hand 120 series VX or Grande - pick them up for about 40 - 45 grand now. They are very capable right off the shelf. I'll put mine against any of the standard cars mentioned above any day.

Going purely on reliability, availability of parts if required, touring range, performance, comfort, and off road ability, I would have to say (in order of preference, Prado, Landcruiser, Patrol (not 3ltr), Hilux, Pajero, Any of the holdens/Isuzu, Triton, Patrol (3ltr), Ford/Mazda Twins.

Surely would have to be either GQ/GU or 80/100....

any of these fresh out of the wrapper would go further than most if not all of the others on your list...
Where is the Rangie or Land rovers???

In stock standard (highway tires, no lift, no lockers etc...) these would be my choice...

This is why I say the Prado - straight off the showroom floor it has traction control and wheel placement cameras. Traction control is every bit as good as lockers, and the cameras, well how many of us only get through obstacles with the help of a spotter guiding us??

The biggest trouble is that the best for touring is not necessarily the best for playing & visa versa

Huh, stock straight out of the showroom with shitty bloody road tyres!

As Brisey just said, touring aint playing etc. Straight from the box the Defender is probably one of the
most capable vehicles built. Shitty driving postion, unreliable (pommy) issues, and not popular
enough to get spares anywhere.
A patrol (4.2d) would (and is) my choice, comfort, reliability and suspension to match the best.
An 80 series would also have to be right up there as a go anywhere, and make it back type vehicle
as well.
Prado's are a bit small for what I need to pack so they don't come into it at all sorry, rank right up
there with Jackaroo's though eh!!

The Prado is a little small especially comming down from an 80 series BUT - it give me a good excuse to buy a new Kimberly :D
I'm all packed for a month in the alps leaving on Christmas day and all thats in the back is my 40 litre waco full of beer, 1 blanket and 4 pillows so as far as room goes I got plenty and still have the kitchen sink and hot shower and probably the same fuel economy as the cruiser or patrol with no trailer.

The landy did not get listed for a number of reasons,
1. reliability
2. comfort (defender)
3. parts availability in the bush
4. was not enough room in the poll to name all the vehicles on the market.
Everybody please remember that there is no right or wrong answer to this poll, it is just a bit of fun to see what everybody thinks is a good platform to start from with a std vehicle.
and also please remember it is about vehicles off of the showroom floor, not modified vehicles, so just factory extras is all that should be added to the vehicle, do not worry about tyres as all modern passenger 4wds come out with HT tyres.

Interesting to note that std, the patrol has quite low gound clearance though. My triton came with 30 mm extra clearance over a Patrol as std...
