Water pump/cooling issues

Hi all,

I recently replaced the water pump on my 2015 VDJ. Now, pending how I’m driving, the dashboard temperature gauge oscillates between just below half and just above half. Prior to water pump replacement it always sat just below half. I haven’t been brave enough to get the temperature gauge above just above half. My heater also doesn’t work.

I’ve attempted to bleed the heater pipe using the little rubber plug but only get intermittent spluttering. I’ve also attempted to bleed the top of the radiator but get steam, no coolant coming out.

Also, when I turn the car off and remove the cap on the overflow tank, coolant seems to flow back into the tank.

Is there anything further I can do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m remote so I’m pretty much on my own.

Cheers,
Tim.

Park it on a steepish incline facing uphill and let it warm up with the radiator cap off and the heater on. Burp the system every now and then by giving it a rev up. Then top it up and cap it.
Did you touch the thermostat? That could also be giving you trouble. I believe they have a bypass valve which closes off cooling ports to the head or similar when cold, so its worth checking its operation

Yep. Replaced thermostat too. I may have solved it using a similar approach. I took all the bleeders off, kept overfilling it and squeezing pipes then filling some more until I had coolant coming out of all the bleeders. Thanks for the reply. I think I was just too scared of overfilling the system. I suspect you can’t though as per the little hose on the overflow tank. Is this correct?

When bleeding cooling systems I loosen the bleed nipple until it is only just holding in place. When the flow of coolant is consistent I nip it up and top off the radiator. I also fill the overflow tank to the highest level. If there is a small airlock in the cooling system it will often draw from the header tank when the air does displace. I do wash any coolant off the engine so I can track any coolant leaks later on..

You might have air trapped in the cooling system after replacing the water pump, which can cause temperature fluctuations and heater issues. Since you're experiencing intermittent spluttering when trying to bleed the heater pipe and steam from the radiator, it's likely that air pockets are causing problems with coolant circulation. Try a more thorough bleeding procedure by running the engine with the heater set to high and the cap off the overflow tank, allowing the engine to reach operating temperature while periodically revving it to help release trapped air. If possible, elevate the front of the vehicle to help air bubbles move toward the bleed points. If the problem persists, check for any leaks or obstructions in the system and consider consulting a mechanic who can provide additional guidance or assistance, especially if you're operating remotely and have limited access to tools and parts.
