Warning Century Marine Pro Batts...

OK

I know a few of you use Century Marines as auxiliaries etc..Because of the limited space I am limited to what I can use with aux..So I bought the Marine Pro 580..I use stuff all aux power.. The last one they put in, it was another brand (when installing my duel batteries) was basically a standard batt and lasted nearly 5 years

Noticed when I got back it had leaked everywhere...

Century know these batteries are being used in 4wdrives and have added extra liquid to cover the plates etc and have gone back to the caps on the top of the battery rather than the flip up lid... So when 4wdriving the liquid escapes through the top..

I personally cannot see how this is good for boating either...

Wrong battery for the job, yep certainly is now....

This is just a warning if your thinking of doing the same in the future....;)

Yep Swaggie,

I to had a Marine pro 720 & a deep cycle battery as Auxiliaries, the marine pro always leaked acid into the battery box, i thought it was a problem with overcharging but no, 14.4v & nothing over. Got fed up with the bloody thing & pulled it out, added another deep cycle & no problems now. So i got a battery sitting in the shed doing nothing & it's only 14months old.:(

Iv found the century overlander to be a better option and doesn't leak.
I have 1 of each, overland as starter and marine pro with flip top lid for aux and niether has leaked to be honest.
I remember having a conversation with you ages ago Wayneo about the marine pro so went to get another overlander but the place I get em from were out so reluctantly got another marine pro, as I can get em for $138 I didnt want to go elsewhere and pay over $200 for the same battery.

Thanks for the heads up mate, I'll definitely keep a closer eye on my marine pro in future, its been in the truck 12 mths now and all good so fingers crossed it stays that way.

Yeah mate I knew you were one of the guys that run them... I originally had the flat top but realized it was dead flat,so i took it back and they only had the caps on the top that was fully charged, the guy said it was there latest, I thought nah the flat tops were, but talking to the Century rep over the phone there not.. My other century4wd battery thats flat top has been fine..I reckon the Century Marine would be fine with the flat top I originally bought, should never have swapped it...

Cheers

Hi Bud

Just out of curiosity is the caps on top (pull off) or do you lift up a flap to access the liquid.

Cheers

I havent seen a marine with the caps on top before, would think the flip top would be the latest for sure mate,,sounds like the other bloke may have been trying to get rid of old stock perhaps.

Actually I think that maybe incorrect, I think my first marine pro did have the screw in caps, it never leaked but died after 25 months, just out of warranty, typical.

Yeah mate that sounds right,Thats the reason they've put more liquid into the batteries and have gone back to the caps on the top..He mentioned batteries were expiring quickly..Hence your issue...

Seems to be a catch 22 then, lees liquid battery expires quicker, more liquid and battery leaks.
Think they may need to go back to the drawing board and get their design right.
Hope my latest one last longer than 25 months.

I ran a Century battery years ago and it failed just under 12 months ( was in warranty but they came up with an excuse and I was young & dumb) and was told stiff cheese have not bought another Century Battery since

I've also got one with the flat top filler plugs underneath thats leaking, I also thought it was caused
from overcharging.
Thinking my next will be an optima, smaller AH but a faster recharge rate.

Ive had 3 century batteries and ill never used them again after the last experience.

FJ45 - been all around Australia (in other words i dont think a harsher battery environment exists and i understand they will fail in a shorter time frame as they are slowly shaken to death).

First Marine Pro (Aux battery) failed in about 13months, was replaced while on the road under warranty (i believe 'out there' they looked after me as most places do when your on the road if you need help). This battery was one of the original Marine Pro's which had the exposed screw caps on top of the battery. FWIW this battery never leaked.

Failed by failure to hold charge, no load rested overnight it would drop to 11.xV off the charger.

Second Century battery (Cranking battery) failed in about 24months. Never let me down until then, no leaks etc... (Same exposed screw caps on the top of the battery).

Failed by failure to hold charge, no load rested overnight it would drop to 11.xV off the charger.

Third Century battery (Aux battery) new Marine Pro 720 (recessed screw caps under cover panel). Failed in about 8 months after a Melbourne > Cape York > Melbourne trip. No leakage was experienced until the Cape York trip (inc. lots of Vic High Country work prior).

Failed by failure to hold charge, no load rested overnight it would drop to 11.xV off the charger and bad leaking problems (no cracks in the case could be found).

Century Rep was very friendly and helpful as we discussed the problems and i also went over my vehicle and showed him just how meticulously i look after things etc. Told me where to take the battery and who to see (local battery world) and he'd sort it out for me. His own words were the battery was faulty no question about it.

Thats where the trouble started, battery world shop recommended by the Rep was pathetic some of the worst customer service ive ever had and IMO they had zero idea about batteries or battery maintenance and condition.

Bottom line there position was, battery was used in a deep cycle application therefor it has a 6 month warranty. (It is written there in small writing on the battery 'the fine print' so that was that). The Century Rep wouldnt return my calls after that.

If you have a Marine Pro, or any other Century Deep Cycle battery used in a deep cycle application then the 24month warranty is void and it is only covered by a 6month warranty.

Personally ill never use another Century battery nor recommend them to anyone.

Travis.
