Video Cameras

I've just bought a new video camera. A JVC Evirio 60gb 32x zoom. What a great toy! Amazing how many things you can do with the new programs. The picture quality is amazing!!
It came with 2 batteries, carry bag (man bag! ) 3 year warranty. $840.00!! they are so cheap now. Apparantly, all electronics are going up considerably very soon due to the Aussie dollar and new range coming out.

Anyone got any tips on how to make the most out of your video camera in different and varying conditions, etc.

She's looking at some kinda tripod set up in car for when we go up bush. She is hanging out for Otooles to try it out there.

Have you tried to edit anything yet? I will be following this thread closely. We have a new Sony Camera but it is a pain to try and edit the vids.

Cheers

With the harddrive units, you just plug them into your computer and burn to harddrive or disc or both. Have at least 2 copys then format the camera to clear it. Store the original disc and then edit on puter. So easy, even I could nearlly do it!!

I think you can but the problem I think is tha newer recorders record in Mpeg4 abd you need a decent program to edit them.

Anyone got any other info to add..... I'm like a fish out of water with this one.

I have a program called visual hub which lets you convert just about any video format to any other format, it is a mac osx program but im sure you can get similar for pc. so when i shoot stuff on my phone camera for instance, I transfer to my computer convert it from Mpg4 to DV then put it into my editing program on computer. sounds complicated but its very easy.

The camera comes with the editing programs. After looking at it a while, it will do more than I'll ever need!! Still simple though.

I recently bought a Canon FS-11. It uses flash memory (16GB) plus SD cards.
The advantage of the flash memory is that there are no moving parts like a hard drive....makes it ideal for mounting in a 4WD bouncing around the bush tracks.

The Canon records in MPEG2 format. You can do basic editing with the supplied software (PIXELA Image Mixer 3 SE), or with Windows Movie Maker. I prefer Widows Movie Maker.

A few years ago I made up a simple aluminium bracket that mounts to the jesus bar in my troopy. To this I mount the pivoting head from my tripod, and then the video camera on top of that. I had a Panasonic Mini DV cam, and this worked quite well, except on corrugations....the camera just shook around too much. The new Canon is much lighter(only 260 grams), and much lower profile, so it works much better in this situation. It's a very funky little toy to have in the fourby:)

I use a suction cup with a small angle bracket on it to still the camera to the windscreen, the same principle as the phone holder

Thats a pretty cool setup bungie, where did you pick it up? Or is it a bungie inc product? I decided it was time to invest in a decent vid camera for chrissy, JVC Everio, 60gb. These also record in Mpeg2 format.

Next up I have to get the burner unit for it, that way there is no need for PC, just plug camera into share station and press burn.

Something different, I mounted a web cam to the rear vision mirror and attached it to a computer that sits on the dash. Works a treat. the PC runs OZIExplorer and I'm currently trying to write a plug-in for it to have the camera view embedded within OZIExplorer. The images are suprisingly good even at (640x480x25fps).

Joffa.

Very cool Joffa, something I can look into down the track, although I should be able to stream the JVC direct to the laptop, but your way would remove the need to mount the camera

That's not bad! I have been trying to get a mount for the front of the Paj, I know Frosty said it will get damaged but that's the fun of it!, that one with the full case is not a bad idea!:)

Canon HV30

Have been looking into a camera for a while now and my father recently purchased a Canon HV30 for around $1100, nice little camera very light weight!
It takes MiniDV tapes so very cost effective when purchasing 66min tapes (Using Non rated HDV MiniDV tapes). The quality is fantastic giving a 1440x1080 interlaced picture. A mate has a HV20 (Discontinued) so i'm looking forward to 4WDing with him as the footage will look very similar.

I use to edit all my videos in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and prior versions however ever since working in the TV industry now Final Cut Pro is the way to go! I have a issue of capturing on my MacBook that it hasn't got firewire so i guess i'll have to capture the footage on my PC then possibly use MPEG streamclip to convert it to a mov file for FCP. I still would defiantly recommend Premiere Pro or similar software, I just converted due to job requirements.

Just a note from above regarding playing out your video to your TV's DVD burner, you will lose a lot of quality doing this! Best to try capture it directly to your PC / Mac or find a mate that can do it for you :D.

Hey Guys,
Went to Stockton Beach the other weekend and took my HV30 along with me and asked a mate to film it, while i drove. Edited in Final Cut Pro, if u wana see how the HV30 performs without any filters check it out:Stockton Beach 18.04.09 on Vimeo (I did however do a bit of colour correction and contrast adjustments in FCP)

I will suggest tho, if you own or intend on purchasing a camera with an motorized lens cap, a cheap investment is a lens filter which will
A - help you get a better picture providing you use the correct filter for the correct job, and most importantly:
B - stop any dirt or dust from getting into those small moving gears as it's a very expensive repair job! You wont regret the purchase of it ;)
