I am at the understanding Tom Groggin has a camp area before heading up to Thredbo. The plan to scamp a night there, is it a good stop?

Yes, last time I was there it was clean and decent, only has a long drop dunny though, the tom Groggin Camping area is about 5 KM past actual Tom Groggin .

Don't like the idea of Burgoynes with a camper trailer, dry maybe , but if wet , forget it especially if it has had the grader through recently .

Forget going down from Pinnibar to Tom Groggin with one , I have left Corryong on a fine sunny morning and it has been pissiantly raining up there, you could quickly become a holder of a Darwin award, they don't recommend trailers going up to Davies High plains either, a slight drizzle can make those tracks very slippery and lethal, on that trip it had snowed 50 meters higher up in elevation from Davies Plain Hut . Your juice bill will be horrendous ! In that country you have to be prepared for anything because that is very likely what you will get - towing a trailer would be pushing your luck, I feel !

Thanks for the advice Bushnut. I thing we will stay on the western Hema sheet for the 4 weeks. I can certainly see how the track to Davies High Plains could get hairy. i do remember about 3/4 the way up was that steep little dog leg. We have been lucky on our last 3 trips and managed to get the trailer up there however it wasn't a 1.4 tonne kimberly.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Who's 4by made it to the front cover of the winter 09 edition of 4wd Victoria magazine??

Hey Bushnut?? Good one!

Back to the topic: Burgoynes river crossing with a camper on the back? Next they will be coming down Flat's Track in the dark with a camper on the back.......

Got a '97 Kimberley Kakadu myself, great comfort, but there are places where I wouldn't take it, on those trips I have resorted to a 3/4 swag, I now have a rooftop tent which slides out from the side of my ute - still got the comfort factor and don't have to climb a high ladder when I have give a red a bit of a nudge !

Haven't seen that publication . My little red truck made the cover of trackwatch magazine last year after the Mitta-Mitta 4WD gathering and in one of the centre pages as well .

I'll go down in infamy !

Not sure what your saying here nickj. I actually thought I was doing the right thing and asking for local knowledge before I did something stupid and trashed my rig. Bushnut has been most helpful in probably saving us a lot of wasted time and money. I don't know Flats Track just want to take my family on a nice holiday in the alps.

bmurry.

We camp there every Australia day week end. You wont be disappointed big flat area with well maintained pit toilets. We use Tom Groggin as a base camp to explore both the NSW and Vic alps.

Phil, being giving your trip some thought, so this might help if you havent planned it out fully. The overnight near Licola is leaving afternoon & heading there via the 'blacktop' I gather:confused:. If so, suggestions as follows, as I have done a trip as follows;

Leave Licola early in the morning heading up Glencairn Licola rd & get onto Black Soil Track then onto Macalister River Tk. Leads onto Butcher Country Tk all the way up to Howitt Rd. (Rooftops Jamieson-Licola Map is the one to get for this section)
Turn right onto Howitt Rd then left down Zeka Spur Tk to Wonnangatta. Depending on time you arrive at the 'gatta', you can either set up camp for the night, or continue on to Talbotville via Herne Spur, Wombat & Cynthia Range Tks. Is a big day to get to Talbotville, aprox 9 hrs of driving, but imo is worth it as camping at Talbotville is hard to beat. At Talbotville you are right on the Crooked River/Blue Rag/Collingwood Spurs Tks & only about 40 mins from Dargo where you will need to get fuel.

Cheers

Allan

sound good allan, just what i wanted some one to tell me a good way to get from licola to dargo. im getting a Dargo - Wonnangatta Adventure map it recons it covers from licola to hottham, if its got all these tracks on it ill high light the treak you have kindly posted and that will be the plan. cheers phil

Yes agree with Gilly on this flats track is not camper friendly unless you are into arse puckering adventure.

Sorry Mark

Twas my aweful attempt at humour. I have been across the Macalister River at Burgoynes Tk and it was just up to the bonnet on my Pathfinder and flowing quite fast. I actually got snatched across with the engine off just in case of water ingress. Certainly wouldn't want to tow a camper across it at that height as the camper would probably end up in Licola! And as Gilly mentioned, I towed the camper down Flats Track in the dark on the way in to O'Tooles Flat this year. Certainly a spectacular entry, but one I wont be repeating. The track has changed considerably since last year with all the rain we have had in the area.
You are certainly doing the right thing asking fior local knowledge around here before you head out. It's something there is a lot of around here - excellent local knowledge.
My apologies if you thought I was having a dig at you.

Phil, that map is the best for what you are doing. It even recommends a trip from Licola to Dargo via Tamboritha Rd, Moroka Rd, Pinacles/Billy Goats Tk, Wonnongatta Rd. As Allanmac said, there's some good camping at Talbotville or anywhere along the rivers up there. Crooked River, Bulltown Spur, Collingwood Spur are also great tracks around Talbotville. Definitely break the trek from Licola to Dargo up into at least 2 days to get max enjoyment.

If you have more time, from Talbotville, head north along South Bassalt Trk or Brewery Creek Tk right up to Bassalt Knob Tk up to Blue Rag Trig. Its the best bit of track I have ever done. You can go on Youtube and search on Blue Rag 4wd and check out the videos of it.

All good Nick, no harm done mate. I did manage to get the easy coordinates from 4X4. They are all programmed in and ready to go. Just like me. Less than 2 weeks to go and still got to get the camper etc organised.

Theres quite a few camping spots along the river between these. Crap road from Matlock to Aberfeldy but enough other driving to out weigh that. As for the rest, seems like you have an awesome plan. If time permits, take the track past Blue Rag Trig and right down to the river, its awesome appearantly. Wish I did it when wewere there at Easter this year.
Dont forget report and pics after you get back!! We will be camping near Arbuckle Junction 01, 02 and 03/01/10.
