Victoria, Walhalla 22nd March Trip

Hi all,

I am planning a trip to Walhalla on Easter Saturday. I haven't been to Walhalla before, but a lot of people have said how great the tracks are around there.

The plan is to meet at the Star Hotel at 9:30 and then head down Old Walhalla Coach Road. The plan is for an easy day of 4 wheel driving and to keep the tracks as easy as possible. I haven't been to Walhalla before, so let me know if there is plan is no good.

Bring along recovery gear, CBs, picnic lunch and a sense of adventure.

Let me know if you are interested in coming along.

Hope to see you there.

Check with Alan before you tackle any tracks up there. Unless you have your Hi-Lux!
The "S" on the map means super! (steep)
If you want some water, head down to Coopers Creek camping ground and cross the river there. Its a nice spot fr lunch. Hey, did you say Star Hotel, so is that but be early!

Alan, we are heading up to Sheepyard late Good Friday or early Easter Saturday. We were going via Walhalla Rd but I don' think so now. Have fun, lots of pics....

Hey Nick,

Yes, we are definately go to try and find something a little less challenging than last time. The track should be OK, so we will check it out.

It looks quite nice out there.

Nick;

We are either going to Merringtons, or maybe even checkout Coopers Creek, we are not sure yet. Probably get some maps and checkout some tracks around Coopers Creek, and make our mind up from that.

Where is Sheepyard? If you were going to go via Walhalla Rd, must be around the same area we are going to be. Anyway, hope you have a great weekend, and a good break. I look forward to seeing your pics as well.

Sounds good. The Old Coach rd is ok, we went up as far as Coopers Creek Rd, which we planned to go down into Coopers creek but it was closed. That was in early January though. Brunton's Bridge was closed then too. You might be able to get the Patriot up the Cricket Ground Trk, wanted to but have only walked up to the cricket ground from in town. Coopers Creek is a nice area, I think there are only bush toilets though. The river is not deep so you should both go across to the middle at least.

Sheepyard Flat is up near Mt Buller. The people we are going with work at Moe and we were going to leave from there, through Rawson, across Thompson Dam, Woods Point, Jameison, then up to Sheepyard Flat. Probably over to Craigs Hut on Sunday.

Hope the weather stays nice.

Hi james ,

Your proposed trip to Walhalla would have been good, except I am going up to the 4WD gathering at Mitta Mitta over Easter, apparently it is a pretty big event. For details 4 X 4 NATIONAL GATHERING

Are you only going for one day or spending the whole Easter around the area ? Camping areas such as O'tooles Flat and Merringtons further to the north are great spots, Tracks vary greatly in ratings too . something for everyone, let me know if you want to organise something up there.

Here are track notes for the area, you dont have to go back to Rawson but can continue north of Wahalla

How to get to O’Tooles Flat

Basically the drive to Moe ( Last chance for FUEL) then onto Erica then onto Rawson is pretty straight forward., Although you don’t go into Rawson but continue up to the Thompson Dam,

Drive over the dam wall and continue onto a T intersection Walhalla Road turn Left

Stay on the main road

TRIG Track on Right , do not turn into – PSA

CHERRY TREE TRACK on Left, do not turn into – PSA

CASCADE SPUR do not turn into – PSA

JUNCTION – keep to the right

PIPELINE TRACK on left. Do not turn into- PSA

DREAM CREEK TRACK on right, do not turn into – PSA

MERRINGTON TRACK – TURN RIGHT

PLEASANT TRACK on right , do not turn into- PSA

SULLIVAN TRACK off to left, do not turn into- PSA ( there is also a track leading down to the right which leads you down to MERRINGTONS camp area- DO NOT GO DOWN THIS ONE )

You will cross over a stream / river and you will come to a JUNCTION, to the right there is WILLIAMSON”S SPUR TRACK which is the most direct but is steep down Flats Track

WILLIAMSON”S SPUR TRACK ,. TURN RIGHT

FLATS TRACK on left, TURN LEFT

It is a steep descent in spots but you will soon see a clear area lower down, this is O’TOOLES FLAT

Your other Alternative is at WILLIAMSON”S SPUR TRACK, do not turn into – PSA

Continue on Merringtons track and shortly you will come to another creek crossing, crossing the creek, off to your right is JUNCTION TRACK turn onto this

JUNCTION- to the right .DONNELY CREEK ROAD,TURN RIGHT.

JUNCTION- to the left is WHITE STAR TRACK, do not turn into –PSA

TRACK ON LEFT, do not turn into, this leads into Little O’Tooles,- PSA

NEXT TRACK on left- TURN LEFT..

YOU HAVE ARRIVED

Patriot's Jeep Patriot is limited as it doesn't have a low range for the car.

Getting into O'Tooles via Merrington's is pretty easy, do it in 2wd. Donnelly's ck track is pretty rough from
a bit after the camp site up to McEvoys, but high range. The 2nd left at Merrington's is Junction track, this will take you to Donnelly's Creek Tk. Little O'Tooles was still closed 6 weeks ago for
revegetation so might still be shut. A good map is Rooftop's Walhala map, not that accurate but does the job. There are a few tracks you do not want to go anywhere near without low range.

James, taking the old coach rd is quite easy...

for a little more fun (not really hard at all...) from the Star hotel, go up the road along the stone wall (you will know what im talking about when you see it.) it takes you via PIGS POINT to the maidentown trk.

follow this to the bruntons bridge (old coach rd) track. you can then follow this track all the way down to bruntons no worries...

On you way back, go back the way you came (along maidentown tk) and stick to the main track (you will come to some ruins on your left hand side (see pic) after going past the gold mine track and some houses..

if you take the track to the left it goes down to the town (quite steep near the bottom)

if you follow the track to the right it goes all the way round the back of walhalla... you will eventually come to another track (its called the BRITANNIA spur track on the tracks map) - follow this down thru the gully and back up again... it joins onto the cricket ground track... turn left and it takes you to the cricket ground, right goes either back to the main rd or a little way on from joining the cricket grnd trk goes DOWN the spur back to the main rd (go easy going down!)...

I will post up a track map for you to have a look at....

here are some google maps... if you take the YELLOW line with the RED dots...

Img 1 - Road from star hotel, up the stone wall track (general store on the corner), follow this one and you will come out at the bruntons bridge track...

Img 2 - from end of img 1 to bruntons bridge...

Img 3 - From the bruntons bridge track bac the way you came past the ruins and onto the spur track

Img 4 - from the spur track, along the cricket ground track. (you will have to come back the same way as its a dead end)

Img 5 - following the spur track down to the main rd.

Now alternatively at the main rd you have 3 options....

1. go left - back to town

2. go right and then left and back onto the spur track - takes you up to the mormon town trk (this will bring you out near the Thompson river and railway - long steep decent - CAREFUL!)

3. go right - follow the rd for a while and you will come to the mormon town track where it comes out at "kellys" the area here used to have a pub and store on the way out of walhalla and further into the hills...

Hey Gippsurfer,

Thanks heaps for all the information. I don't think the inital tack should take too long, so we may try a couple of the ones that you have suggested. It should be great fun. Hopefully you can make it out there.

Nickj, how was your easter weekend? Our was great, did a few tracks, until I blew a pinion seal, relaxed in the sun, and just enjoyed time away from it all.

I was hoping to put pics up, but Sam had the camera taking pics of frogs, butterfly's and such.:mad:
