Ute vs SUV

A ute with a decent (dust and water proof) canopy would be pretty good. I guess more space than the back of a wagon, but I guess it depends how much you want to carry and the actual load capacities too.

We use utes at work, and driving to work remotely, everything in the tray just gets covered in dust. And kids rule out using your backseat for anything.

My brother tried to convince me to buy a ute because I could help people move house with it.

Yeah nah.

a ute with a dust free canopy? does that exist or even possible
I had mine dust free for a while, but hard to maintain the seals when they are just glued on rather than designed in. It takes a fair bit of sealing, starting well before putting anything at all in the tub. The tips here helped me, but the final irritant is the tailgate/rear window and that's hard to have a great seal, but is possible.

My CSM 3 door tradie canopy has done about 80,000km of dirt roads. So far not one speck of red dust anywhere inside. Even the back door is dustproof.

Yes I have never had a dust or water issue with tradie style canopies, had two over the last 13 years , uteback setups with canopies don’t seem to be as well sealed though

Style sides need positive pressure vents. It’s about the best way I’ve found to keep most of the dust out. Too many holes in them to make them airtight. They can certainly suck some dust if left as is.

Hi all, newbie here and new to 4x4ing in general (except for that one vaguely novelty "course" I did for half a day 10 years ago haha). So I'm straight in with being an annoying advice-seeker.. Just sold the sensible sedan and looking to get something to let us go off camping. Just the wife and I + little 2yr old. Basically, I'm wondering what the thoughts are on 4x4 utes vs SUV body - any feelings you have would be great. I know obviously a ute will have firmer springs so will be less comfy for on-road driving. Also, if we end up going ute - it will 100% have a lockable canopy so all our stuff doesn't grow legs. Cheers all! Steve

Wagon will handle better onroad, be a bit better offroad, but the ute can carry more and handle more weight. yes will need a canopy or something for ute.
