UHF Price

Here's an interesting question and I bet you a month to Sundays no one has a good answer, the question is " Why is it that when UHF C.B. radios have been around for so long that they still cost in the upper end of $200+ when the old 27 meg band was selling for chicken feed even when it was still popular". I went to a shop not long ago and a well known one and the asking price is still $299 for a low end UHF this is stupid. Why hasn't the price dropped after 20 yrs of UHF being on the market ?????? .

I'll take a stab at answering that question!

Enough people are happy to pay that much money so the price remains relatively high.

Little compettion in the market place.

Economies of scale, Australia is such a small market that there is no possibility to buy radios in serious quantities to save costs.

Retail margins in Australia are amongst the highest.

Just a theory :)

Anyway time to take off my economists hat and put my environmental hat back on so i can do some work. :)

Check these guys out:

UHF are the go now all trucks and most 4x4s have them they are a lot clearer to listen to and have repeater capability and are not just a radio EG,cell call, scanner and other diff things you can do with a uhf. Another thing is that not every house hold has one if they did they would be lower in price. The 27meg is dieing you would be lucky to find someone on AM.35lsb you will get people from all over AUS and the world(when its the right time). This is the governments doing as they are selling of the 27meg bands to privet people. If you have a 27meg and you go around the channel you will hear funny noises as companies use the frequencies EG,pay tv.radio controlled cars, electric fences,Just about anything that uses a radio controlled frequency and its not just 40 ch on 27meg every CH has .5 incumbents So if your on 27.355(witch is ch35) you can go 27.356,27.357,25.358,27.359,27.350,27.351 and so on till your back at 27.355 this is called in between Channels so thats in between CH 35 and 40. soon 27meg will die for ever But the more people that use it the more chance it will stay around. The price of a 27meg can still be high it all depends on what you want to get out of it and what type it is. I use a Magnum Delta Force they will cost you about $400 to $500 Hope this helps your Q......

Sambartom, If you've paid $400-500 for a Delta Force if it's a 27meg, you've paid way too much as I've seen them here in Adelaide for less than $200 as you said 27meg is a dieing art BUT why is it that UHF is still $299 for for the low end model when 27meg low end all those years ago was less than $100. I can remember buying a 27meg back in the late 70's when it was just legal for $99 yes it was only am but I didn't need anything else back then. Yes 27 meg is used for a lot of things in the country areas but here where I live and use UHF we get interference even on UHF from factories so your come that companies are using 27 meg is not quite true as most Adelaide business are using UHF. The Question still hasn't really been answered although Jarh73 you've gone some way to helping out.

Hmm those prices at Prestige are ok Justin.

I got my Uniden 012sx off ebay new for $209 delivered and got a 2 pack of 036 handhelds for $29, yes $29! So that price of $239 for car mount and handheld is great!

From what you have said "if its a 27 meg"so then you don't really know what they are.If you can get Delta force's for $200 then i suggest you buy all of them and sell them on ebay as you will make $$$ and NO i did not pay to much for mine.Yes they are a 27meg and a 10meter ham,cw and FM,has over 400 channels. You should have a look at some 27meg prices NOT am sets but SSB sets. The Uniden AX144 is a old CB and i can get $200 to $300 for it on ebay or to a CBer (thats if i wanted to sell it)Their are more that i can list if you want them all worth over $300.Im not shaw if you are talking about companies using UHF wear you live to talk to each other or if they are using the UHF frequency(witch is diff to using a uhf CB).Yes some Things out there do use UHF(ultra high frequency's).(27meg frequency) not a CB(frequency) is used for a lot more things EG,just about anything that uses a remote,Take away drive through shops, roller doors, toy cars, kids toys, the list can go on and on why because the government is selling off the band So what i have said is 100% true thank you but don't just take my word for it ask some 27meg operators that have been around for a while.Yes you could buy a AM set YEARS AGO for $100 and now for $5 Why because they are not used anymore(AM only that is)but as all things in this world UHF included are going up in price (its called inflation "think that is spelled right"). Way back when, UHF CBs you could get them for under $300 NOT now tho and the UHF today has a lot more in it as well. They don't have to drop the price of uhf CBs WHY as long as we keep paying the top dollar for them why would the drop the price and as i said UHF CBs are used by a select group of people if we all had one in the car and in the house then they would prob be a bit cheaper to buy.I got my first CB when i was 10 years old i am now 33 and have always had one set up in the house and car and have meet a lot of good people from using them so i would say i know a bit about CB radio's.I am also a collector of 27meg cb radios and i have a top collection of hand held, home base and mobile CB radios.I also can make any CB band antennas from beams to whips. O and soon to be a VK3.....THANKS..TOM.....;)

PS...not to shaw wear you live but hear in vic companies that want to use a UHF to talk to each other need to be on a higher UHF band (yes i know not all do)as the 40CH UHF that you,me and the avg joe uses IS a citizen band radio and should not be used by companies (and yes i do know they do as i said).......

No not realy interested in 27 meg Sambratom the title of this thread was why is UHF still pricey when its been around for so long, I guess the retailer knows money talks and he can rip-off who he likes anyway with the advent of cell technowkedgy these days and the fact that we hunt within cell phone areas who needs a useless 27 meg or an expebsive UHF CB these days, REMEMBER I siad we hunt within cell phone areas that means need city fox hunting.
