UHF channels (busy when radio is turned on)

Hi all

I've got a Oricom UHF025 with a Oricom antenna. Everything works eg. people can hear me, i can here them HOWEVER my issue is whenever my stereo is turned on (whether or not the car is running or not), it tends to make some channels while scanning say BUSY which is pretty annoying however when the radio is turned off, it scans no worries until conversations are picked up.

I've tried connecting positive and negative on the battery..... No change... positive on battery and negative on body... No change... positive and negative running on the stereo earth/power.. No change.

I'm running out of ideas (apart from just turn the stereo off which I don't want to do and isnt really a solution) so where else could I try?

Thanks

Your stereo is putting out spurious emissions on the channels that say busy.

You can move the UHF and antenna further from the radio, take those channels out of the scan if they are rarely used, or buy a better UHF.

Try a hand held near the radio and see if it happens to that. Also where is the antenna mounted? If it is on the bullbar or guard, then its radiation pattern is pointing directly to your radio, try moving it to the roof

It's a decent UHF so can't complain.

Antenna is on the guard. I'll try moving it away from the radio and see what happens.. I'll work it out in the end.. just got another issue i gotta worry about atm

Good luck, try moving the antenna away too, even if it's just to test.

I also forgot to mention, many radio issues are earth related. Make sure you have a good earth, preferably running it back to the negative on the battery.

The fact that it is picking up interference from your radio tells me there is an issue with the CB. It sounds like it may be a shielding issue on the UHF antenna cable to me.
Might be time to replace the coax!
I'd be checking that out before I started moving stuff around.

I would say the wiring to your UHF. is too close to your radio wiring. Do not earth to another radio of any sort and try powering your UHF. with a jumper wire from the radio, out through the door to the battery to prove the problem. Its quite common for radios of any sort to pick up interferance from other power supplies. Distancing usually fixes it.

well I did more sussing out... no matter where I earth or power its the same HOWEVER when the stereo is screwed in, it does the issue (some busy channels) however as soon as i start moving it away (20cm), the busy status stops and scans normally.. i moved the uhf to the radio and further away, no difference so somewhere with the radio its upsetting something as soon as its screwed in where its supposed to be

Had a similar problem with my Omicron, even took it back and changed it, turned out to be an aerial earthing problem }: What i did was lift the aerial, attach a earthing wire to it and ran the earth back to the earthing point of the battery. Problem solved
ps the aerial is located at the front in the bar

Thanks will check that out.. My aerial is the oricom $70 6.5db from Repco. Works well except this issue haha.. my aerial is gutter mounted but not sure if its metal or a semi plastic at the bottome.. or do i put it around the thread so it clamps together?

I've stuck a earth from the battery terminal and wrapped it around the thread of the aerial. just had to adjust the squelch to half and seems alright at this stage.. ill test it properly tomorrow

Just about to say that the bull bars paint was enough to isolate the aerial, even tho gutter mounted still think you would have to make metal contact, ie put a hole in the paint !!

yeah ive drilled a hole to put a nut and bolt in to hold the bracket but yeah ill see how it goe slike it is.. ive ordered a 63mm bracket for my nudgebar so hopefully that will escalate it.. otherwis i'll be still looking towards something around the radio area

I hope you used good quality coax cable…It may look ok on the outside…
I’d be running a new cable to see if it makes any difference.
