Triton vs patrol

Hi all.
Just after some educated opinions.
I currently have a 2012 triton with enough modifications to make it capable.
Before I spend more $$ on the triton I am deciding whether it's worth upgrading to a gu patrol of the same vintage (gu8).

The triton is a family car and we are into camping and increasingly into 4wding (hence the interest in patrols)
I know the basic benefits in a patrol, that it is way more capable than the triton but the triton is great for camping with the family.

Can anyone convince me 1 way or the other?
Cheers

before even getting into the capability debate you have a simple question to answer. Ute or wagon? Which suits you and the family best?

The ute works great now but I can't see why with a full roof rack a patrol couldn't do the same?.. I don't need 7 seats

It you are happy with what you have, its doing the job you want if we just look at the financial side of things would be worth it.

A GU Patrol is one of the last best offroaders ever made. A real end-of-an-era vehicle (along with the 70 and 100 series)
Especially the TD42. That's a truck motor,

A Triton is just a Triton., one of the many generic mid-sized utes. Ok the Raptor is pushing that somewhat.
That does not mean there is anything wrong with them.

spot on (except isn't the raptor just a dressed up ranger), very different vehicles. Although I'm guessing you're looking at 3L patrols Bigadz? I'd still have one any day over a Triton and I'm a diehard cruiser user ;).

But it's more about wagon vs ute, not old school heavy duty vs new era car-with-4wd-capability. Unless you're looking at duabl cab GU/GQs :D?

I used to own an mn triton that was pretty well kitted out.
It was a great car that was a great daily driver and weekend rig.
Once I no longer needed a Ute for work and got a company car I sold off the triton and went back to having old 4b’s that are weekend only toys.
My wife currently has an old gu as we need 7 seats.

The gu is a great car but is very large and cumbersome.
Personally that doesn’t bother me as I drive trucks for a living but it can get annoying when parking and whatnot.
I personally think if your just camping/touring/ medium/hard 4x4ing then stick with the triton. With a front locker, lift and good tyres it’ll take you most places. Plus the Ute is much much much better for storage than the wagon.

If however you need more internal space and plan on tackling so extreme tracks then the patrol is perfect.
Personally i think if your happy with the triton id stick with it.

Good luck with your choice mate

I bought my GU Patrol new in Jan 2017 and handed the Pajero over to the missus. I must admit I've had a hard time falling in love with the Patrol, mainly due to the lack of power from the 3 litre CRD. I've sorted that out now with some mods, (Remap, 3" exhaust etc) and I'm happy enough with the power. It still drives like a truck on the road compared to the Paj, but offroad it absolutley comes into its own. They are one tough mother of a vehicle and it soaks up whatever I can throw at it with ease.
I was thinking about trading it for a Y62, but I'm really loving the live axle setup when we head bush, its just so sure footed in the rough stuff and the dash doesn't try to jump out the window like the Paj. Its a pretty thirsty beast for a 3 litre though, at an average of 17lph, but as a daily it weighs 3 tonnes with my usual gear in it, and around 3.5 tonne when loaded with extra water and fuel for long trips. One of the reasons I bought it was due to the availability of the GVM Upgrade, although I had to register it as a 5 seater to do this.

One thing I miss about the Paj, is the Super Select transmission, the Patrol transmission 4wd select system is liking stepping back in time ;)
