Triton MR aka Grumblebee

So I got this a couple weeks ago and having a ball so far! Only other 4x4 I’ve had was a KK Cherokee 3.7, but liking double-cab life so far. The name is my SO’s idea, says it grumbles like me.

Anyway, this “build” won’t be extreme and add-ons won’t be many. Mainly focussed on trekking and family camping in the high-country.

First add-on was in my view a necessity for a ute, namely a canopy. I opted for a FlexiSport Premium from Flexiglass. Will see how we go with that.

It’ll cover stuff, I like the profile, roofrack, lifting windows and central locking, but a bit disappointed by the lack of sealing around the tailgate corners.

https://flic.kr/p/2kSSHJD
I’ll have to figure out some soft foam gasket or something for that along with sealing the tailgate as best as possible.

Planned future mods:
Raptorliner this weekend
Grunt tailgate seal kit
Bedrug PET carpet liner
BF Goodrich KO2’s
Stackable camp crates
Dual battery system
Roof mounted solar
Dual fridge/freezer
Custom winch nudge bar
Low profile rear tow bar

Everything in the tub will be easily removable so it can still be used to cart stuff around for everyday life, hence crates and no installed drawer or sliders (although I might fold on a quick-disconnect fridge slide).

I have a flexi sport on my MN had had the same issue, like you I could see day light through the corners & water/dust was getting in.

Not very good for something that cost 3K+!!

Anyway so I did as you were saying, I got some self adhesive thick high density foam & put it on the top of the tailgate(I'll take a picture for you later).

I also used some other self adhesive foam around various areas of the tray so when the tailgate is closed it seals better & stop the dust getting in, you will be surprised how much dust will get it!!
You can buy a kit from Grunt as well designed specifically for you model but then again you can just made your own to.

I also had some more issues with the fitment with the seal between the ute tray & the canopy which I fixed myself, should have taken it back though!

I got a Mitzy tub liner, thats the thing I dislike the most, its to hard!
So I like the idea of those spray liners, there are quite a few around now.

I just noticed you were in this thread.

I might think about ripping the other one out at some point but getting my suspension upgraded is the next spend.

I also did my own dual battery set up & went with a solar blanket over a fixed panel but that is all a personal choice

If you look at the link in my signature you will see my battery set up.

Good luck & happy :)travels

Is it super select or easy select?

Super Select 2. I believe only the GLS, GSR and one of the models aimed at tradies has SS2. Basically the centre-diff and rear diff are both lockable.

A winch nudge bar?

Yeah, something like this, that you can mount a winch to, but preferably with cut-outs on the “jawline” of the front bumper so the front wheels are a little more exposed, with plate covering the bottom sides.

Why? I want to keep it light weight, while retaining the standard lights and sensors.

Awesome! Thanks! Yeah, I wasn’t impressed when I saw that (after getting back). I could stick my hand in there, and for that money?!

At least I specced it with a roof vent to create positive pressure inside, but I would prefer static water and dust resistance as well.

Canopy looks good, it really suits the profile of the Triton :)

Re: Grunt tailgate seal kit: I have a Ranger + canopy with no tub liner (so your mileage may vary...) and installed the kit, which I'd describe as "OK" at best.

It will probably help a bit, but I wouldn't expect it to completely eliminate dust ingress.

LOL, I just noticed the Grunt tailgate kit was in your mods list, I have to read the whole thread better :p

Im looking at doing mine again & am think I am either going to get the kit to or use a different material to what I originally used.

The kits do look good though.

I think trying to completely eliminate dust ingress is a fool’s errand, I’m not building a Mars rover.

I just want to eliminate unnecessary dust as far as possible, and big gaps don’t help. It’s for the same reason I got the canopy fitted with the positive pressure vent.

Here we go with comprehensive pics from doing the Raptorliner yesterday.

We ended up painting with the canopy on, because we couldn’t get it off. They must’ve used double sided VHB tape to mount it at the front.

Anyway, proper masking is key, especially if you want to get the edge lines right, which we did, right up to the very edge of the canopy. So, the canopy seals still sit on paint, but everything else is Raptorlined inside.

We had dropsheets coming out of every place and even had the canopy ceiling and whole outside of the car covered in dropsheets.

The prep and masking took us two and a half hours, then the spraying and finishing off probably another three and a half hours (including two one-hour time slots for flash off).

We didn’t mask off any panel screws or rubber bungs, which I might regret eventually, but nothing that can’t be repaired and recoated later on.

Hi mate, Just recently acquired the same coloured GLS MR and slowly setting it up.

Currently 3D floor mats, seat covers, dashmat and the 5 piece bed liner.
Only 1700 klms so far but really enjoy the ride, still have my GU Patrol and a 2WD Navara.
Next mod will be canopy followed by rear protection bar, I had a towbar fitted but will probably sell the original (should have held back) Truck will be mainly used for touring also High Country camping.

Nice one mate! Such a great colour too!

Currently 3D floor mats, seat covers, dashmat and the 5 piece bed liner.

Which seat covers? Where’d you get the dashmat? Reason I didn’t go for the prefab bedliner option, is that debris collects in between it and the tub, the rubs through and rust forms over time.

I had a towbar fitted but will probably sell the original (should have held back)

Yeah, I didn’t like the clearance on the standard tow pack, which is why I didn’t go for that. Will do an integrated one if I get a rear protection bar.

Seat Covers were Micro suede from fitmycar, full set $170.00 the dashmat was from Supercheap $49.00
I guess that the debri issue will have to be tackled in time...
Am looking at fitting the Force Pro Plus Canopy as soon as the budget allows.

Nice canopy! I like the square side doors. Got my canopy off the sales lady’s recommendation. She steered me away from EGR. I don’t know enough about canopies to have made the best choice though.
