Trip from Sydney to Birdsville and beyond

I am in the planning stages of the first trip in our new Prado, which recently replaced the 20 year old Pajero. We were attracted initially at the thought of seeing Lake Eyre with water in it, but understand that the water is retreating at a good rate of knots. In any event we are heading out in mid August from Sydney via Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Tipooburra, Cameron Corner (catchy name!), Innamincka etc to Birdsville, then down the Birdsville track and back via Broken Hill. We don't plan to do this in a great rush and so I am seeking any suggestions that you might have about diversions, places to stop and explore, camping spots and even places where a good cup of coffee is possible, as my wife needs to be considered! We thought we might also go on a plane ride out of Marree to see the lake or what is left of the water in it.
If there are any others on this site who a similiar trip in mind around the same time, we would also like to hear from you, if you are seeking company for the trip

Billolga,

Thank you for your response. I tried to send you a PM but then realised that my post score was only 4 and that I need 5 to be able to PM you! This one should count as the fifth.
You make it sound as though Central Australia is part of your backyard. We will be seeing much of our trip seeing this country for the first time and so we want to be flexible enough to be able to spend a couple of days in places that appeal. For example if I was to catch a yellowbelly early on in Cooper Creek, you would have trouble shifting me with gelignite!
I do want to find out who this upstart Cameron was, who had a state corner named after him. I should have got up earlier that day and got there before him!
My wife and I have yet to discuss our itinerary in detail, so I will have to let you know later where we are likely to be on particular dates. Stay tuned, and once again, thank you for responding. I look forward to meeting you over a Coopers or two if we can manage it

It's great out there & you will find the roads quite good (The Birdsville track & the Strzelecki are ROADS now) , AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T RAIN!

Camerons Corner - ALL the corners have names - You will be passing HADDONS CORNER as well (It's easy to get too as well).
