Top mount-front mount intercooler difference

#1
Gday, im looking at buying a intercooler for my gq patrol, but im not sure if the one im looking at is a front mount or top mount.
Does anyone know if they have the same mouting point but just use different brackets? Or the moutings points are in different places on the intercooler

G'day Isaac, welcome to earth mate, if you go for the front mount you'll more than likely have to cut the radiator support to fit it in and also muck around a bit with the piping.........if you go the top mount it'll be a lot easier to fit, but you'll need to have a bonnet scoop for the air flow, (there are pro's and cons for both, have a look at the patrol forum) good luck with which ever way you decide to go......

Thanks mate, do you know if the actual intercooler itself are the same?

Don't look like they're the same, have different mounting brackets..... ( you really should join the patrol forum, they know everything about everything to do with patrols - a great place to learn about your car ) "patrol 4x4 .com"-------------and this site is great for trips and getting experience off road, lots of people willing to help/teach you about 4x4ing.........

Generally speaking if its 300x600x76mm or bigger it most probably is a front mount.

If its smaller its a top mount.

Not a fan of intercooler on top of the engine as they produce heat soak.

I prefer front mount all the way.

Depends entirely on the intercooler - some are pretty much universal fit. Top mounts are preferred by some people up north where there is a lot of spinifex, but front mounts seem more efficient
