The towing thread

In September 2016, Dwayne Ten Vaanholt was driving a ute and towing a caravan that was in turn towing an overweight trailer, which dislodged and ploughed into an oncoming truck on Brookton Highway in Kelmscott.

The truck's driver Stephen Illing suffered multiple injuries and died in hospital.

Ten Vaanholt pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving occasioning death, with the District Court told he had modified the bumper of the caravan so it could tow the trailer after watching a YouTube video of how it was done in America.

Ten Vaanholt was on his way to a campsite and the trailer was carrying four quad bikes, two chainsaws, a motorcycle, several fuel containers and other items including boots and helmets.

When the trailer was weighed after the crash, it was found to be more than one-and-a-half tonnes over the recommended capacity.

Thats real sad stuff. Imagine if it the other way around.
The truck driver would get locked up for 7 years at least .

You'd surely ask yourself why others are not
towing a trailer behind there caravan, wouldn't ya.
Sad indeed.

Motor home type van towing a small car behind or behind a caravan
being towed ?
Sorry I should have clarified , rigid motorhome types. Still I wonder if they would even know if its still there or not , as you can't see in the mirrors , But I would assume they had rear cameras.

I see plenty of them also, not that much different to a truck towing
a small trailer except for the lack of decent mirrors.
I'll find a recent pic of a nice setup.

The big difference is one is a trained professional driver the other can be a novice

Check this jigger out, how to make the most out of a cheap chinese
5 wheeler. Mount it on a decent truck backwards. :)

They know its still there. Otherwise someone would have told them with the UHF 18/40 sticker with his and her name, and another that says if you can read this where the *%&k is my trailer?

Surely it has to be illegal? I've always wondered why I don't see 2 trailers being pulled by an LV

There is one guy in Oz that has a setup like this all engineered and legal
in all states and territories except WA from memory.
Here's a little from a post talking about it.

A while back I read an article in a newspaper (I think the Sunraysia Daily) of a retired truck driver from Mildura (or thereabouts) that had setup his caravan to also tow his tinnie on a trailer behind. Had the tow hitch on the rear of the van all engineered, certified and was it was legal. He had a HC license and apparently the only restriction was he could not tow it through a town or on a route that B-Doubles were disallowed. Yes it was a caravan (not a 5th wheeler) being towed behind a 4x4 and also towing a tinnie on a trailer. I am sure I took a snap of the photo in the article so it will be on my phone somewhere, will try to dig it out. Be interesting to see him back that combo onto a campsite!

Edit: It may have been the Mildura Weekly.

I think the Rego # was MMM - RUM
Can't find any pics of it.

Interesting. If it can be done legally I guess the only reason caravan manufacturers don't offer it as an option is there mustn't be demand for it. Also begs the question that if you don't need a licence upgrade to tow a van then I assume you don't need one to tow 2 trailers behind an LV. He having an MC licence would obviously help when pulled over by Constable Plod.

MC license is part of the requirement, not something the average
grey gonad would be keen to have to acquire. Especially if your taking
prescription meds, as your required to under go medicals every
six months or so for a few years to keep your license.
