Cooloola way, freshwater road

G'day folks,

A couple mates and I are planning to head up this area for the first time. Im driving a Jeep patriot and my friends has rav4 and outlader. We're thinking of taking Cooloola Way up to Freshwater Road this summer. Do you guys think our little suvs can make it without too much trouble? whats the track's condition around december?

Any advise would be great.

Cheers Mark

Take care, set your tyres to the correct pressures and carry rated snatch strap and enjoy.:D

i would be carefull taking the rav as the sand can get quite soft if there hasn't been any rain, and ravs often dont quite have the ground clearance and end up dragging half a ton of sand. also if you go to rainbow the rangers will warn you off a Rav, i've been there a couple of times and noticed rangers "advising" rav drivers not to go to far.

Teewah?

Also when is the southern end beach access going to be closed off? Are permits required to travel up the beach to Rainbow? It would be a shame to see such an accessible area made inaccessible.

Yadda, yadda, yadda.
I've been over all those tracks in a 1997 Forester auto with no problems at all. Just keep your tyre pressures low, use momentum and low gear. If the ruts are to deep from all those "Big" 4x4's ripping it up, make your own path. :D

fair comment if ya done a reasonable amount of 4 wheel driving ive been there in a ht holden stationwagon but if ya not confident it always pays to ask

Soft-on Roaders

Yeah, I've come in thru Kings Bore Rd and up and down Teewah beach in our XL-7 Suzuki - only 200mm clearance - and didn't need to use low range. You would only get into trouble in the deep ruts going on and off the beach (assuming you don't drive in the surf) and there are plenty of people with Patrols and Cruisers to rip the front out of your Rav/CRV.

4 weeks ago, I did Freshwater and down the beach to the ferry.

I was told by the info center at Rainbow Beach that Leshia track was open but very difficult. The tides were wrong for us to get there so we did Freshwater instead.

Freshwater at that time was in the best condition I have ever seen it and it was being negotiated with no problems by soft offroaders in the direction from Rainbow beach.

My brother took my Troopy in the reverse direction 2 weeks ago and had no problems but I would not be game to try a soft offroader in the uphill direction as the track was very soft and rutted. Getting into Freshwater camp was a problem for everyone according to my brother and he had to have a couple of goes in the Troopy to get in. We had no problems 2 weeks before in our Rangie but my bro was there during the school holidays.

However soft offroaders should have no problems getting on and off the beach at the southern end at Tewantin.

Also at Inskip point, 4 weeks ago, the sand was very soft and rutted at the ferries with heaps of vehicles stuck. We went for it in the Ranger ad got through to the ferry and back with no problems - BUT you did not want to stop.

As usual, go with another vehicle if you are unsure, take a spade, snatch strap and shackles and let your tyres down.
