Something a bit different

I have hired a Motorhome in a couple of weeks and driving from Sydney to Darwin as a blacktop run and then plan on spending a week or two up there and flying home. I haven’t booked flights back as don’t know how long we will be there so will make it up as we go
Apart from doing a different style of holiday I am wanting to try out a Motorhome as have been thinking for the past few years about getting a Traveltruck for some extended touring.

Any suggestions for things to do , places to see when in Darwin region? We have been before and done Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Gorge but happy to go there again
Will be limited to hire car for travel so won’t be able to go far

Any suggestions?

With a Old man bus I'd be looking at.

Umbrawarra Gorge at Pine Creek.
There's a small camping ground, and some walks plus safe swimming.

Edith Falls
Camp grounds, get super busy you need to be in early for a spot. Some big but good walks with more safe swimming spots.

Katherine.
cutta cutta Caves,
a hot spring. easy walk from. 1 of the caravan parks. I think it the G'day caravan park.
Katherine gorge very pretty.

Mataranka (bitter springs my preferred spot plus a basic caravanpark in walking distance). 4.5hrs Sth of Darwin. Awesome hot springs.

Another option Crab claw, only real attraction is fishing l have hire boats thou.

Daly River.

Not sure if you have done the museums either, East arm War museums is worth a look, the tunnel near the waterfront.

To get right in the groove, pull up in the trucks only rest stops every 2 hours and make a pot of tea so that you can annoy them when you aren't moving as well. :D

All jokes aside, it sounds like a fantastic idea. My old girl won't camp so I'll probably be doing the same soon.

Yeahhhh but its a IVECO.
They have something that really looks the part, and tick soooo many boxes. unfortunately I still wouldnt touch 1 will a 10ft pole.

That troubles me as well, a Fuso Canter is probably a better vehicle from a reliability point of view from what I have read

Don't know much about the Iveco, thought they were OK the guy off an old 4x4 TV program, Simon Christie I think it was, drives one I thought, what are the issues with them?

That brought a smile to my face, the first time I did the Canning Stock Route there was a chap in a 4x4 Canter getting stuck on every dune, apparently the wife's cutlery & crockery was flying everywhere, and a Hema Map Patrol helped them get to Kunawarritji. The advice from Graham (servo operator) & the mechanic was for them to head out to Pt Hedland via Punmu & Telfer, but he hung around waiting for us hoping we would help him the rest of the way - the bush telegraph is an amazing thing for them to be aware that we were on the track a day behind although I suspect the Hema Map Patrol may have been listening to me reporting to VKS737 every night.

Fortunately we didn't encounter him as we quickly moved on to Well 34 for the night, but our travelling companions who stayed the night in a cabin agreed with us that this was not going to happen anyway. There's another thread on here about helping others that don't deserve to be helped, and I didn't want to be responsible for someone that I didn't know or was incapable of traversing what turned out to be the easier part of the CSR as the Northern end had bigger dunes and off camber travel on the dune ridges.

cheers
