What made you think you need it? I'm considering going with a king swag when there's just me (wife not interested in fishing ;)) but if a fly is desirable I'm not as keen on it.
Bit confused about the question. You’re saying if I find a fly useful then it will put you off ?

in terms of the first part of question, certainly don’t need one - have done probably 60 trips in my Darche dirty de and 4 in my 23 zero bandit (only had it 2 months) - def don’t need a fly - more a convenience / comfort add on.

but the 23z offered one for $49 so I thought why not. What I do like so far is it will allow me to put kids (Sleeps in swag with me) bags / boots /stuff up under the fly sides at night instead if inside swag, or worse out in the dew / rain which leads to daddy my feet are wet!
Can probably keep side windows completely open and still have privacy / dew protection over night (else bedding gets wet in my experience).

also noticed that in the sun , the inside of swag is way way cooler and darker (so any sleep in past 5am or arvo nap would benefit) and also in any rain ,less chance of having to pack a heavy wet swag away wet and air out at home (pet hate of mine)

but it is more setup , pegging down - and whole reason I went for swag in first place was I detested Complex setups and flys on tents !
I also reckon it might sail flap in high wind - yet to be tested.
So time will tell!

probably worth the few extra minutes setup in inclement weather or 2-3 nighters

Why did you change to the 23zero over the dirty dee, is it a better setup?

I blame covid and ordering shit online!

Nah truth is it piqued my interest and IMHO is a better design over the DD. I do enough camping to justify giving it a crack and so far impressed. YOu can now open / close all outer surfaces from inside the swag, whereas on the DD , you had to get out of the swag in middle of night to put the canvass flaps down for example. Additionally they've got gussetted storm hoods on both ends of the end portals so you can have air flow with complete rain protection .. and even then there's still a canvass flap on inside additionally so if its cold you can zip it up from inside too. The "feet end" (which we sleep haeds up at ) is higher and not as tapered.

Just a better design all around so far, stitching seems better too, bag is way better with a big shouldered opening.

That being said, i still run my dirty dee when the girls come along, or if i want my son in one so i can stretch out (he's like sleeping next to a crocodile)
Both are great swags

Thanks, answered exactly the questions in my mind. I don't hate flys, I just don't want to feel like I should put it up.

Nice to hear, is it just as easy to setup and pack up?

Is that the 1100mm wide version? The fly is what has me interested. 2 layers and breathable appeals very much to me. I have a swag, but I’ll take the hike tent or the expedition hammock over it or a bivvy bag every time because they wet out with condensation too often unless I sleep with my head outside which kind of defeats the purpose. It is good to hear a first hand review.

Yep ... slightly bulkier because there's a fair bit more canvass and zips / panels, but bag is much easier to deal with too with the way they've done the zipper.

nah 1400 ... i figure if going a big heavy 4wd based swag it might aswell be a queen!
and yeah the dew is sometimes a PITA ... having to wait until mid / late morning to dry out.
Will see how it goes

so have a DD1400 and looking at the 23zero i reckon i would swap. the DD is great but the 23zero looks like a refind and improved DD

yep exactly what i thought, and is the case. Just design improvements in bandit

What do you camp in? A plastic bag?

Maybe he means caravans with hard walls?

I too would like a caravan for the one or two trips a year that warrant it ... but every time I sit down and honestly ask myself which of the 14-18 trips I do per year I like the most, each time its the 1-3 nighters into very hard to get to 4wd locations that are small, scratchy, tedious to get into ... and near impossible to tow anything into (without limiting or severe stress) ... so swags remain king for that.

Even then, the cost of a van that i'd want ... would pay for a LOT of beach house rentals... and we do that a lot as it is, rent a great house in a town, and then day trip to the remote coves / beach spots in 4wd.

So many hard 1st world hard choices we have to make! (well , whilst we still are in the 1st world)

I'm in the same boat.. every time I look at my neighbours van and go "Geee, I reckon I might want to get one of those.." I do the sums and can't even come close to justifying it. Renting one for the occasional trip though certainly makes sense and something I do plan on doing from time to time going forward

Just as the neighbour if you can borrow his van (might have more luck asking to borrow his wife but you never know...)

Ditto, i want to rent a van ... but there's a problem in WA now with renting or buying ... its one hell of a sellers market.
Things here are going insanely gangbusters, everything everywhere is busy ... tourism is wiped off its feet, people are paying top dollar for caravans, and people are on 6 month waiting lists at best to get one ... forget renting them in school hols. Likewise in school hols, almost all accomodation booked out a year in advance even in low seasons!!

Because the hard border, and no covid cases outside of quarantine since April, its BAU here ... people are "reclaiming" lifestyles and pushing hard to travel wihtin the state (can't leave, can't go OS) ... so absolute boom on recreational stuff.

I reckon once borders etc reopen in a year or two, there'll be a big glut in caravans etc, great to time to then buy...

TBH, I reckon he probably would let me borrow it if I asked nicely... Dunno about his wife. 2 for 1 deal?

I'm in WA too so yeah I know what you mean.. Trying to shop for camping gear lately has been a bit of a nightmare!
