Securing contents of chest fridge for off road

My fridge is pretty deep, it could probably have 3 to 4 rows of cans stacked.

The issue is hitting the trails with cans in the fridge. I usually have first row all cans and then on top random food items. I'm having trouble filling all the air space so everything flies around. Cans eventually break, food eventually breaks.

How do people secure their items? Are you stuffing rags or something inside?

Any help appreciated.

Other issue i ran into is that i eventually drink these cans resulting in even more space for food to fly around (I usually replace the can i take out with a warm one but towards the end of the trip i end up with lots of dead space).

Are people carrying rolls of bubble wrap or some other packing material to fill the dead space? Or are people not really hitting trails with fridges?

Lay it on its back, like a real fridge haha. Seriously, I had an Engel upright in the early 2000’s in the campomatic. What a piece of crap. I can’t believe they got so popular. There are spacer bar sets available through camec etc that can be moved as you drink the stock down.

I put things in tall plastic containers, eg keeping the meat all in one section, tall enough for other things not to fall in.

We had a cooling mat for the dog we'd keep in there, it worked pretty well.
But failing that, stuff some towels in.

Maybe slow down…-:)-)))

I’ve traveled a lot of The High County over the years. The only issue I’ve had is the blue milk lid came off the containers once opened hence I use different containers for it now..
By the time I found out the bottom of the fridge was like a milk slurpy ….

Leave them in the 6 pack holders , or ask at the bottle shop for the plastic retainers that craft beer comes in. They remove them for single sales.

I lost almost half a slab of cans (XXXX only beer available in FNQ) They were the extras and still in the carton. There was no room in the car (SWB L'Cruiser) so they were secured in the trailer. They rubbed holes through each other from the corrugations. I was forced to chill then drink more so we didn't waste any more that way. o_O

A dozen pairs of kids ( small children not goats) socks are great for food or drink cans to stop them rubbing through, or a LR

The bonus for LR owners is if you are sitting on the side of a road you get a fire with any effort of making one your self

Yes but you'd want to make sure the cans don't fall all over the place when it's on an angle being towed up on to the tilt tray when it arrives.

And it would getting pretty uncomfortable for the contents everytime the air bag suspension fails.

Yeah, agreed. If you smash cans in the high country then you are probably speeding. Though a couple of weeks on corregated roads or tracks are a different story. You really do need to do fridge management.

I got something like these. I cut them to the length of a can. They are perfect and about 30c ea if you buy 50 or 100. Unlike the commercial ones they take up no space when not in use and let the cans chill quicker. The ones I got were a bit thicker but I can't find them now.
