Savannah Way

Hi,

Planning to do the Savannah Way between Cairns and roughly Katherine, and just wanted to know the fuel range I should be budgeting for? Unfortuntely I can't afford a long range tank, so I plan to carry two or three jerry cans of diesel. How many would you recommend, or how far is it realistically between good fuel stops (not skimming the edge sort of thing). Obviously weight is everything, so if I can get away with my standard 76L tank and 2 x 20L jerry's, that would ideal.

Cheers

You haven't said what sort of vehicle you're driving but I would suggest getting an idea of how many litres per 100km your using so that we can give you a better idea

cheers

Sorry mate.

2005 Toyota Hilux 3.0L turbo diesel single cab. Mods are 265/75R16 tyres (two spares), bullbar, dual battery, spot lights, UHF. No canopy on the ute, just space case, fridge, 40L water, gas bottle and a few other odds and sods. I'm predicting my weight will be about 2300kg fully loaded, GVM is the 2850kg (stock).

Cheers

116 liters at approx 14/100 loaded in a Lux?..... sit on 95km to keep it down if you go up to 110 you will require approx 20%+ more power to hold that speed.

I think that should give you a range of about 750km which is enough to get fuel stop to fuel stop but you wont have much range if you go sight seeing etc

Cheers. 14L/100km sounds about right. On the highway I'm getting 10.9L/100km. At this stage it looks like I'll be travelling the journey on my own, so there won't be too much venturing off and sight seeing, but it maybe a third jerry wouldn't be bad idea incase I meet similar minded folk and decide to do things together.

Sounds like a good plan and also as a test run load your Lux up to the max & go away for a weekend at least a a shake down trip.
Load up with water - fuel - spares - everything you intend to take with you.

Try to do similar driving as you intend to do up here & note the Fuel economy and ride etc of the vehicle so you will absolutely 100% know what to expect & plan around that.

Also jump on the web & check driving distances from fuel station to fuel station you want to know the longest trip you have to do between fills.

Good to see a post in here, I'm heading up on posting from SA this year as well. I was getting about 650 out of my 08 hilux when touring and loaded, have the 145 lt now, just check that all of the stations across the top are actually open and fuelling.
