Rust protection options?

Hi All,

I purchased a 2007 Nissan Patrol about 4 months ago which has no signs of rust. I havent really done much beach / sand driving (only a couple of times), but just wanted to know how important it is to have rust protection?

I have been told about an electric device which prevents rust, as well as a rust protection under body coating.

Also, I live in Brisbane so not sure if being so close to the sea that my vehicle will be more susceptible to rust? I do park my car in the garage.

I dont plan on doing any serious beach driving, perhaps a couple of times a month.

Currently, every time i drive of sand i give my vehicle a good spray on the body and run a sprinkler under it for about 5-10mins (moving it from front to back).

Is there anything more i can or should be doing to prevent rust?

Do what you’ve been doing so far, and also with a hose and good water pressure, just put it in one end of your chassis, flush the internals until it runs clear of sand.
I do mine both ways to be sure, and all nooks and crannies of cross members, guard splash liners, behind mud flaps etc.

Spraying anything (rustproofing materials etc) underneath or inside places will usually see it sticky, and literally sand will stick to it like the proverbial to a blanket.

Just wash wash wash . . . the whole car body, paint, underneath, internal chassis and so on.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated... but how do you put a hose into your chassis? Had a quick look at the underside (front and back) of the vehicle, but couldnt see where i could put in a hose?

There are big holes punched into the side of the rails at various points along there, you might have to get right under the car and look outboard and its a fair bet you are going to get wet. Take the plastic fitting off the end of the hose and feed it in forward and backwards and give it a good flush. Sand/salt and mud will come out the drain holes.
The chassis will rust if you spend a fair amount of time at the beach, but it is a lot heavier than the sheet metal and treated with paint coatings to protect it, so panels will display rust holes long before the chassis is compromised. Probably looking at greater than 10 years if you do nothing and go to the beach a lot, how long are you thinking of keeping it?

I prefer oily greasy stuff sprayed inside the doors and body panels to stop the water and salts getting in there between the sheet metal layers. Underside, go with some heavy bituminous paint that won't attract the grit as much.

Modern cars are built pretty well and have seam sealants and decent paint jobs, unlike the old holden/ford that had rust installed at the factory.

Thanks! I dont plan on doing excessive beach driving, perhaps short drives once or twice a month to get to some of the swimming hole on Bribie Island or occasional trip to Fraser Island. My patrol only has 115k on the clock, only see myself doing 10-12k per year max, so i do plan of having the car for the next 10 years.
