First the good news. Rooftop Maps are now available with the whole set being digital..

Now the bad news, is they are only available on Hema's completely useless 4wd explorer app and they have the nerve to charge $100 per year.

Rooftop maps are fantastic, but the guy who does it only updates about map a year because he wants to revisit every track, and every location by pushbike. So $2500 and 25 years of subscription will get you a full set of up to date maps. Most are already 10 - 15 years old.

I bought the adventure app, they abandoned that in a year and it was useless. Then I got the 4x4 adventure map which is no better and full of paid POI's. I deleted it because it is useless and too complex to use. A complete waste of money.

Thanks for nothing Hema. The Kodak of the map industry. Great at paper products but have no idea about digital. $100 per year for the Hema maps, $100 per year for the Rooftop. Nearly $20 per month for an app that is hard to use, buggy and for some rarely used, 15 year old maps.

Here is my tip. Order the paper ones you want as rolled not folded. Take them to a printer scanner place, get them scanned into PNG or TIFF for about $8 each, then georeference them on Memory Map. You keep them forever. You can also order all Hema maps for $100 that you own forever or can upgrade for half the annual fee every few years. Then whenever you want print versions, just print them ( preferably on your work's A2 colour pinter LOL)

I've got the Hema 4WD explorer app now... and its design and quality are both terrible. Real amateur hour. Although, the map data itself is good... maybe just good enough for me to keep using it despite the how broken it is.

I don't understand how Hema can be so consistently terrible at creating apps. Why haven't they responded to all the bad feedback and corrected course and hired some better software developers? They seem to be making things worse.

Is it because they are focused on their Hema Navigator products, and don't really care about the apps?

That's because it is really Memory Map and wasn't made by Hema.

You can import pretty much any raster map or image map ( TIFF Format) into Memory Map. You have to do it on the PC version which is well worth getting. Rooftop isnt available through their store though.

Were can you order roofmaps unlaminated rolled ? I have only be able to find them available rolled laminated...

As for scanning .. as simple as a trip to officeworks !

Good question. Last time I got them it was from Melbourne Map shop. But that closed down. I think you could call any reseller or Rooftop direct.

I got very excited seeing the title of this thread... now im very disappointed. The HEMA apps I used in the past have both been pathetic. I moved over to ExplorOz and I find that much better. Less clunky.

I hear this a lot on here and other forums. Maybe I'm missing something, or people with much more experience are upset that tracks or locations they personally know about aren't on the maps. Maybe they've had technical issues.

I don't know - but I've used the Hema Explorer app for years now with no problems. The only issue I've ever had is that after maybe 5 days of constantly running the app, and roughly 1500kms, it has frozen up and I've had to restart my ipad. I run an ipad mini in a Ram Mount and I have to say it's been excellent. I haven't taken it anywhere truly isolated so maybe that's the issue.

Never had an issue checking maps or placing a waypoint. No issues with recording data or navigating in anyway at all. The maps seem detailed and reasonably up-to-date.

That being said I've been thinking about trying out ExplorOz purely out of interest. Plus I figure there are bound to be tracks and locations on one as opposed to the other.

What am I missing here?

I agree that the "Hema Explorer" app was OK. There was a lot of room for improvement, but it mostly did the job. But it has been discontinued, replaced by the new "Hema 4x4 Explorer" app, which by all accounts, is not OK.

Just be careful and do your research before spending your $$. It also has its own little issues/limitations, etc, but at least the owners seem to care a bit more in regards to fixing/updating, etc. Have a look on their FB page for info that may help...

I bought the high-resolution version and decided not to use it. It is a bit buggy ( nothing like Hema) and the routing features they make a big deal about only work online.

I'm not a fan of ExplorOz either. The app is not particularly well designed, maybe I'm just picky, but the main issue I have is how it displays a web of unaccessible roads. You can't rely on it for choosing a route from point A to point B. From what I can tell, that is considered a virtue by the developers.

Some of the user-contributed "Places" information available in the app can be useful - but it's pretty hit and miss. WikiCamps is generally better for that.

For anyone that has Memory Map on their iPad or Android ( or even Hema 4wd app with a Memory Map Account), I really recommend that you download the PC version and link your maps to that in addition to the tablet or phone.

You can
Download height data and look at maps in 3d.
Print sections of maps in sizes up to A3 This is the best function. You have paper AND Tablet maps.
Buy maps forever without pesky annual fees
Import or export tracks from Hema or Expoloroz or...........one day 4x4Earth
Edit tracks. Joining or spliting tracks.
Show speed and height data on tracks if they have them. Great if you get tracks, you can plan how fast people have gone.
Show two maps at once ( eg Hema and Westprint) at different scales and different maps. All synched together.
Send your tracks and waypoints to your tablet or phone.
Do 3d fly thoughs of tracks and routes
Make easy what if tracks to see distances and heights of tracks. Check gradients etc

If you buy the $50 option you can also
Print any Size maps
Import any TIFF image and calibrate it
Use Marine AIS signalling

Its a bloody Ripper, and the PC version combined sharing maps with the portable laptop / phone versions for no extra is miles ahead of anything else IMHO.
