G'day all,

So I've had my 2014 Collie for a month and a half now, haven't done any towing or offroading yet, but I've noticed that the engine bay is radiating a fair bit of heat after it's been running for a while. Even though the temp gauge has even climbed over half-way and usually sits at a 1/4, and I know these modern diesels run warmer than other cars but I feel like this thing is running warmer than it should be.
Just wondering if people have had this same sort of worry.

Cheers,
Hugh

The temp gauge won’t move past halfway unless the engine is about to cook. You need a Scanguage to tell the real coolant temps. Depends how well the 2014 was looked after and serviced. Suggest you take it to a radiator specialist if you are concerned.

Yeah thanks, has done bugger all work before I picked it up plus it's only done 97,000 k's. Serviced ever 10-15 thousand and well looked after

Yeah but has the coolant been changed as per service schedule and with the correct type of coolant?

First thing I would do is pull some bits off so you can clearly see the front and rear of the radiator so you can check the fines are not full of bugs or mud, if it is it will severely decrease the air flow causing overheating.

I'd be inclined to believe my temperature gauge indications, i.e. you have no problem. However to be safe just check that your coolant levels are OK, transmission fluid OK (levels, smell, appearance), engine oil levels and appearance OK. My experience is it is pretty common for modern vehicles to appear/smell hot if they have been recently cleaned/degreased and this effect may last for a while. As others have suggested I'd check you have a good flow of air through the radiator and front grill. If you remain concerned IMO get the vehicle checked by an automotive technician/mechanic.

If all of the above fails I would check the thermostat and cooling fan clutch next. Hopefully you just need to clean the radiator. Good luck
