Hey guys

I’ve recently purchased a 2014 Nissan Navara D22. The Navara came with an aftermarket head unit being the Kenwood DDX4019BT. It has a reverse camera installed. With the Kenwood, the reverse camera worked no dramas.

I upgraded just the head unit (Pioneer DMH-Z5350BT) and speakers and kept the existing camera and cabling. Since upgrading the head unit, the reverse camera doesn’t work.

The camera does work if I start the car in reverse. I had a multimeter plugged in when I started it and the camera was getting 12.5V. After the starter motor did its job and the car returned to idle, the voltage dropped down to 10.4V and the camera turned off.

Any ideas how to ensure it maintains above 12V so the camera keeps working?

It was working fine with the last head unit being a Kenwood. I have changed no wiring between the head unit and the camera.
The camera is powered off the reverse light.

Any help would be massively appreciated! Trying to save myself paying the local auto shop $186 to “install” the camera.

Thanks

Does the reverse camera have a relay?
That's what Id look at.

I also dont get what you mean by your voltage drops to 10.4v at idle??
Its should maintain 13.8v-14.2v approx.
Do you have a smart alternator?

I’ll take a look. It was already installed when I got the car.

The voltage on the camera at the head unit end drops from mid 12 to 10.4 after about 3seconds after starting the car. So I’m assuming the problem the camera isn’t working is because there’s not enough to power it. When I go into reverse it does trigger the camera however it’s just a black screen with the guide lines.

Where would the relay be ?

No idea.
Im just throwing ideas out there.
If your saying its being powered by your vehicle reverse light wiring, is your reverse light working or not??
Yeh mate the reverse lights are both working fine.
It’s confusing as it was working fine before. The only thing that’s changed is the head unit and new speakers.
Thanks for your help mate. Appreciate it

Some head units also needs a 12v signal wire to tell the unit to go into reverse mode.
Have you wired this in??
If not, then wire in a single throw double pole switch so you can turn it on at any time.

I fitted a Pioneer with reversing camera to my Cruiser recently as well. I bought the Pioneer to Toyota wiring harness and found that there was an additional 12 volt wire needed to power the camera. Not the same problem you have because mine didn't work at all till the additional 12 volt wire was added.
I reckon it sounds like you have a crook alternator if you have a voltage drop with the engine running. I'd be looking at that before I got too carried away with the camera.
