Recovery Gear

Hey all,

My recovery gear is a little lacking and I want to go out and get some new gear. I've got a couple of questions.

What do people think a basic recovery kit should contain, based on how important the gear is when you need it :) and how often it is needed.

What are the brands I should be looking at and where are some good places to get the gear?

Cheers,

James

James, Recovery equipment is probably the most important yet misunderstood and poorly used equipment we carry. A snatch strap is a must. The strap must be correctly rated for your vehicle. A 10 000lb snatch strap is too heavy duty for a suzuki and will possibly cause damage or injure someone. All shackles should also be properly rated and not just bought from your local hardware. A long handled shovel is also handy to clear under the vehicle without actually getting under it yourself and risking injury. Hilift jacks are also good as they can be used for jacking or with a proper setup can also be used as a slow but sure method of winching. Your local ARB or TJM store would be a good place to start when checking this gear out. Stick with the better known brands and quality should not be an issue. As for the correct use of all this equipment I would recommend joining a club or enrolling in a training course as all of this stuff can be lethal if used incorrectly. Hope this helps.

Cheers

I totally agree with what goldrush has already stated. Maintenance of recovery gear is very important , however very few people take the time. A snatch strap is made from nylon, it uses kinetic energy to achieve the elastic effect, and stretches about 20% when in use. When we use a snatch strap in mud, tiny particles of dirt get trapped in the weave. When this dries it binds the weave, preventing the snatch strap from operating properly. Snatch straps should be washed after use, in clean water, with no detergent. They should be dried in the shade, as they are not U.V. stabilized. Never roll up a wet snatch strap, as this can cause mould to form. A wet snatch strap in use loses 10% of it's rated capacity. Always inspect a snatch strap before use and disregard if any cuts or frays are present. Ensure there are no twists in the snatch strap when using it. This can cause the load to concentrate on a small area of the strap exceeding the rated capacity.

That's not entirely true! F.W.D.V,The Nissan 4WD Club of Victoria, and the Toyota Landcruiser Club of Victoria allow use of factory recovery hooks. It is the small tie down points used as recovery points that are the problem! If in doubt, join a 4wd club or do some training.

hey guys i think where missing something here how about a set of stauns and a good compressor and hopefully a tyre gage maybe so you dont need the recovery gear to start with unless you start off straightaway with extreme tracks is taht an accecptable suggestion

Good point Cruiserlad. A small amount of common sense can also help you avoid the need for recovery equipment in a lot of cases.

I wouldn't class them as a recovery need but they are always handy to have, maybe to help out a friend or stranger and score yourself a free beer... Hahaha! Always good to have indeed.

When toying with jumper leads, don't muck around with toys! Make your own! they are so much more efficient with less resistance and how many sets have you used that were 500mm short. Easy to make, 10 mm battery cable (mine are 4 mtrs. long) 4 GOOD clamps and you can buy surge protectors separatly. Too easy! Only way to go.

:cool:As a matter of fact miss heels, I once towed my brother on his moter bike with my jumper leads. (some clown took strap bag out when setting up camp. oops) Only pulled 2 clamps off. So there ya go, a must in every recovery kit!:D
