Recoveries

Phew! - I didn't find the form to fill in for the Crane Chaser's licence! Then again I only read the first 20 odd chapters.

... on a more serious note; I could count way too many times that I have seen guys race the clock when rigging up for a recovery. Its not a race and most show way too little respect for just how lethal it could get. Stuff like no gloves, no damper, damaged cable or strap, stepping over an active line (even letting children play tightrope on it). I won't even go into the lousy recovery points, trying to pull up a rock ledge with a snatch strap and driving over the strap or leaving it connected as you drop over rock ledges and drag across it. Its just a shame that those same people will not take the time to read all the way through this type of information & when they get it 'horribly' wrong will blame the products not the application. Many are in too much of a hurry to get to their next mishap.

Lets all take the time to learn it so that we can make our time out there safer and more enjoyable.

I particularly like the illustrations - supports the text to explain things in a clear & concise manner!

I find myself going back to this article & each time I relate to past experiences...

This one was on a hired car trailer - I told the mob renting it that they should replace it with the correct pin... they took the bolt out and straightened it with a hammer & said "there ya go - all fixed." The guy said "Are you expecting it come off?"

I've even seen the safety towing chain wired together - Its a bit like tying a balloon to the glove box & the steering wheel for air-bags.

Good explainations of *why* it is important to use propper equipment, in good condition. The reference material is also great. I really liked the US Army recovery guide's recommendations for jacking a vehicle without a jack!

cheers

Looks like a good and very comprehensive article. I've down-loaded it to give myself time to read and assess it. Thanks.
