Is it solid or just a "tin" box?? It might be for running "stuff" over the border?

its solid bit has rubber on both ends, the thing has nothing connecting it to the diff except two bolts, i may need to find a mistsubishi speacialist to find out what it is...

Some kind of vibration damping maybe?
Or a bump stop for the sway bar that is sitting just under it?

A balance weight to stop vibration of the rear axle, or maybe the crown wheel and pinion LOL

its a vibration damper apparently, some have them on the gear box and transfer case and some don't, it would be interesting to see who else has something like this, i know of a hilux that has one on the transfer case and one under the gear box.

funny way of doing things.

spot on Osca4x4, you answered your own question, most 4wds have them somewhere just to dull any vibration from the road.

It must be a Pajero thing as the Prado hasn't have a damper on the diffs. There some up beside the gearbox
