Simple, yes many around the world have and are benefiting from consumerism but the old saying stands true and even more so since the pandemic.
The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, as in the gap between rich and poor is getting bigger at an astounding rate.

Matt perhaps some take advantage of opportunity to better themselves and become “ richer” others remain in their same place so the gap widens?

I am not convinced anything has changed over the years you will always have the disparity, it is human nature

the way modern society funnels money from the poorest to the wealthiest

An increasing wealth gap is very different from money funnelling from poor to rich countries. Different and simple concepts. I has always happened and always will. It's not a rich vs poor country issue. It happened right here in Australia.

I thought you must have had some understanding of this that I don't. Never mind.

A wealth gap is very different from what you said about money funnelling from poor to rich countries. That should be a simple concept to understand.
It was a generalisation about society not so much implying cash was being sent from one country to another, although in many developing countries the standard of living is improving overall I would think there is still a massive gap between the haves and have not.
I am not for one moment thinking we should have some communist state where everyone has stuff all and know that if some have $1000 they will invest and turn it into $2000 and others will buy beer and cigarettes or a bigger TV

First press conference after 100 days as President and no wonder they tried to hold off.
Did not watch it all however here is a funny bit or two.
And this is the leader of one of the greatest powers in the world.
Sad really, or maybe scary to think he has the power..

He is not a leader, he is a puppet with many strings

To be honest, the fact that both Trump and Biden have been elected president, is a serious indication of just how stuffed that country is.The thing to take away from it from our perspective as a country, is to resist trying to emulate many of the things that are now American. Of course there's a lot to be admired, in the past, but it's been mostly replaced by rampant consumerism and greed. Corporate welfare from taxpayers to the rich elite whenever the economic crap hits the fan is the main thing propping up the whole economy.

I tell ya. Democracy is broken. Twitter and facebook are destroying it.

We need a good 15 years of a dictatorship to clean society of the bullshit, political correctness, lobbyists who hijack the agenda and freedom of speech in social media.

Then we can reset and get on with advancing society. Plan for the future, not just the next election.

Look at Singapore. And China. We may think Xi Jing Ping is an asshole, but his popularity inside is over 75%. ( a western survey) People are richer, and happier under his leadership. Voting doesn't even matter and he is popular - why? Cause China has a 25 year plan for advancement and is steam rolling ahead. Unlike our 2 - 3 year plans, depending on the state of the polls at the time and which electorate you live in.

What about the voter's rights? Well Jesus, look at the idiots we have in power, look at the people so stupid they believe 5G and vaccines kill people, look at some polls where the order on the ballot determines who wins FFS. Too many people are too stupid to be given the power to decide what is the best course for the country.

So we lose freedom of speech. So what? Look at the drivel we read on social media, the ABC, A Current affair, etc etc. It's all crap.

And I'm only half joking.

Triple flame suit on.

I can recall when Malcolm Turnbull was PM, Barnaby Joyce was deputy PM, and Scott Morrison was treasurer -- they were asked about how pensioners/young people/basic wage earners could survive on what the government was giving - their responses were........Turnbull -"they should have richer parents".......... Joyce -"move to the country where it's cheaper"........Morrison -"get a better paying job"........These are the type of clowns that we have running this country and by default, our lives....Is it really any surprise that the gap is getting bigger when these germs only do things that benefit themselves and their rich mates ?

Whilst they may not sound like very palatable responses, what response would you like to hear ? the government will give them more free handouts?

They sound reasonable to me, what is society supposed to do?
I have moved further out from the city to cheaper suburbs, I have changed career and jobs several times to earn a better income. Not hard and anyone can make changes to their life to improve life style and quality of work life balance.
The only really questionable response is have richer parents and well what would you expect from Malcolm...
