MITCHELL PLATEAU - The road CAN BE HELL!
------------------------------------
WOLLOGORANG STATION - CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC - NO FUEL

HELLS GATE - Was CLOSED TWO YEARS AGO - MAY have re-opened

(If there both closed it's a long way between fuel stops)

Don't miss the THREE lost Cities on the Gulf.

* Out of Cape Crawford only by Helicopter

* Western Lost City (Nathan River near Butterfly Gorge)
Butterfly Springs 1 pano.jpg
Butterfly Gorge - Great Camping.

You must get a key from the Ranger (Free) making shore you get in EARLY before he goes to work - Make it a day trip from Butterfly Gorge.

It's about 40 kms off the main road - **** DON'T MISS IT ****
Western Lost City 5 pano.jpg Western Lost City 2 pano.jpg

* Southern Lost City - EASY - right near the main road.

How about LAWN HILL!!! - You wouldn't want to miss that.

Don't be scared of the Gulf - It's a ROAD (Sometimes a bit rough But Heh! - not bad IN SEASON!)

PLENTY of good camping spots along the road.

How about from Hells Gate drive down to KFC (King Fisher Camp) for good camping - Through the 12 GATES!!! to Adels Grove for FANTASTIC CAMPING (MUCH better than booking in to Lawn Hill) & do 10 km day trips to Lawn Hill - (hiring a Canoe & great walks) - Bourke & Wills Road House & back up to Normanton - Karumba.

Undara is good with the Volcano Tubes & the RUFUS BATONS (TINY Kangaroos).

As for ALL of the rest of your trip, PM me for ANYTHING you want to know.
----------------
FUEL at:-
Roper Bar
Borroloola
Cape Crawford (Heartbreak Hotel with good camping)
Doomadgee
KFC (King Fisher Camp)
Adells Grove (Lawn Hill)
Bourke & Wills Roadhouse
Burketown.

A Couple of things I forgot to mention:-

BOWTHORN STATION HOMESTEAD - IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC

You can drive through it O.K. from KFC to LAWN HILL (After going through the 12 gates )

GREGORY DOWNS - FUEL & SUPPLIES
--------------------------------

After the introduction of the no Alcahol laws up top (All of NT & North Queensland) in some areas plus other factors, some places have closed down. All across the top & particularly in North Queensland where THEY CAN TAKE YOUR VEHICLE if you brake the rules.

In the Northern Territory EVERY TOWN HAS A DIFFERENT RULE as to when you can buy & what type of Alcahol you can buy, EXCEPT DARWIN!:D
-----------------------
For those travelling ALICE SPRINGS - BULLIA via the PLENTY/DONAHUE HIGHWAY:-

JERVOIS - Has Fuel & basic camping
(Flush Toilets & Showers for a few Dollars)

(I'll have to write a book on this) ;)

I did the same trip last year, i left in April from Melb to Alice, up the Tanami to Broom, through the Kimberleys to Darwin, Across the gulf (Hells Gate was open) Normanton, then up the Cape and back to Melbourne. Made a diary on alot of the camping and how long things took I was away for 3 months.
It was awsum, wish i could go again, you will love it. If you want some info let me know.
Found some great camp spots.....I wish i could of had longer....But had to get back to the wife, and a job.
I am Planning on Melbourne up the Canning to the Kimberleys and down the West Coast next, hopfully in 2012.

Barra is only a good fish to catch as it is a good fighter, as for eating it, there are heaps more better eating fish out there, they just don't fight as much.

Yes i agree, Barra is a little over rated for eating, (its ok) but there are alot of better eating fish, along the to end in 1 trip i caught 28 different types of fish, some good and some not so good. And for the cooking section i have a wicked sauce, mmm mm,
another day for that.

I,m planing to take 2 months but if it takes longer it wont be a problem. I have also bought all new heavy duty fishing gear to hopefully catch that 1.2m Barra that got away.
