Hi jono22, oznog05 and Poolman84 are correct.

If this is going to be a bush and extreme track vehicle petrol would be better.
Touring is better with diesel

What is the purpose you wish to use it for?

You can go either way and be happy. The petrol motor is cheaper to repair if a major fault occurs but uses more fuel. Diesel is available everywhere in Australia and is economical.

I purchased my Prado to do 4x4 driving, beach trips and touring and now wish I had a diesel. I do difficult tracks but not extreme and loving touring around seeing Oz.

i have to disagree and say that diesel is as good if not better in all conditions .. my diesel 60 out did all petrol 4x4's and even those who had big blocks dropped into them there are heaps of benifits when using a diesel 4wd in all situations

Definately Diesel,

Wins hands down.... Winner hands down in my opinion... Reliability, low down grunt, and they just keep going....

I am very happy with the diesel D4D motor in my 2007 Hilux. I think in general the added torque of the diesel is better. I am happy with the off the mark performance of the diesel and have not fitted a chip which is an option if you want more grunt. The diesel in stock trim returned 10 litres per 100 on the highway, but mine is higher now, about 13.5 (it's about 300 kg heavier!)

It will be interesting to compare my fuel consumption for my upcoming week on Moreton Island with BMurray's 26 litres per 100 in a smaller petrol vehicle. In some tests in one of the magazines, two identical vehicles (but with a petrol and a diesel) tackled the Simpson desert. I think from memory, the figures were 15 L/100 for Diesel and 20 L/100 for Petrol which by my calculations meant that the Diesel was the cheapest to run.

I have seen a Petrol Triton on a mild offroad trip pull about 30 L/100 when the diesels in the convoy was around 12-15, but that was before I had my current rig.

My Moreton trip included soft sand and driving sllooowwww over the chewed out track (1st gear low range), I got better economy on Fraser. That is one of the reasons I wished I found a diesel. A friend in Newcastle has the Prado 3.0 turbo diesel and gets better than 10L/100KM on the highway, my petrol gets 12.5L/100km at the best (more like 13.5 in trip mode). Speed and heaps of power isn't the answer for everything.

my next 4by will be diesel

Diesel is the go and for so many reasons. If I was you though and your thinking of a hilux, make sure it has a turbo. I find there is a lack of power in the non turbo.

Definitely aim for the 3.0 turbo diesel. Although they might be slightly more pricey, in the long run you will save as they are a lot more reliable, provided regular maintenance is undertaken as with any vehicle. I had a 2003 3.0TD there for a while as a work ute and they haul ass, and it with normal HT tyres was phenomenal offroad, would love to see what they can do with more lift rubber etc. Good luck, keep us posted. Diesel is cheaper where I live, it goes further and provide better torque off road. My 2.8 hilux is mechanical injected so water doesn't upset it too much. I also have a turbo strapped to the side so the power output is comparable to a petrol engine, My hilux gets serviced every 5,000 kms, petrols can go every 10,000kms. So the fuel savings go into extra services, at the end of the it comes down to individual needs and wants.

Good luck on your purchase.

I would strongly recommend Diesel ... ive only ever been around diesel so i may be biased but you get better economy as every has been saying ... diesels are built like a brick shit house ... ive seen one go way up into the red temp wise ... and its still going today ... (its hard to just pull over when you have a load of paying passengers on a job) so it still powered up and now the oil sensors stuffed and needs replacing but it hasnt had the time to be fixed but like i said hasnt missed a beat

the torque you get is rediculas and thats why troopies are only diesel ... there where a few that where petrol and i have driven one and it just doesnt feel right

imo ... if you in the mud you can develop the right power you need with little assistance from the accelorator so u dont spin your wheels as much and just get the power to the ground ... while a petrol ive watched load it up to drop the clutch (spinning the wheels) and not go any where

thats my $2.38

my recommendation would be the 3ltr turbo diesel ... the 2.8 hilux im unsure if it came with turbo ... but the turbo does make a world of difference if you can afford it and 3ltr would be the better way to go over the 2.8
