I recently also did a walkthrough of the KTI
and have to say as much as I like my GME which has served me well for 7 years and I'm now on the second one. Once a replacement is due again for my second GME it will be a KTI unless something changes. In fairness to GME their PLB is on the market much longer than the KTI so I guess older technology but I think it's time for a re-design.
KTI have been supplying the commercial aviation industry for years and only of more recent times entered the retail sector so new to us but not a new player
I have a GME Epirb for the boat but prefer the size and longer battery life of the KTI PLB over the GME version but I think they are both of equal quality in my totally unqualified opinion

yes I would also think the quality is equal both are reputable Australian companies, KTI has 66 receiving Chanelle's GME 55, 10-year battery life vs 7, and a smaller form factor for the KTI, the TCO is also way less for the KTI. I like GME use their radios and antennas and they have some of the best customer services in my opinion but for a new PLB purchased myself it would be KTI.

Would something like a Codan work in the high country? I remember using these when working near Cloncurry for a mining company and they had a huge range. Country was flat though. Not sure about licensing costs. Could one of these units be used in place of a sat phone for emergency situations?

While I never owned a Codan I have seen people using it and it seems to be quite a bit of effort (rigging antennas high in the trees) especially when not on flat ground. While a satellite phone also needs a clear line of sight I prefer this over an HF radio for me more flexible, cheaper purchase price, smaller footprint in car and less knowledge required. If you are an avid HF user anyway and involved with VKS 737 I can see the purp of having it in the car but for someone new I think a SetellitePhone paied with a PLB is the better option.

It's interesting that people have the idea I'm just given free stuff, nothing is free and the "free" stuff given to me to test does not in any way cover the effort, equipment and time and money it requires research, film, review and do post-production not to mention building a Channel up to an audience where it becomes interesting for companies for you to review stuff. (90% of the stuff I like to review I first do my research make sure the product fit's in what I need and my quality expectations and I then contact the company asking for a test unit)
My comment was not a crack at you. My comment was stating up front, the only skin I have in the game is my own. I am not "owned" by anyone but myself. And from GME's response, they are happy that they loose business to a competitor, cause they didn't want to help me any in this instance.

I'm very well travelled myself and cant ever see me getting free stuff. C'est la vie
I only once got a "discounted" (yeah right) set of suspension components and that story ended badly.

If you can get free stuff - good onya. Keep making your vids, I'll watch them. I'm about to look at your KTi review now in fact.

no worries mate I just hear it so often so had to answer. In regards to refurbishment I don't blame you I think GME would need to drop the price on the PLB and refurbishment or develop a new unit in line with KTI battery life, size and pricing. The market has changed and new players with newer technology are on the market and a company needs to adjust.

Also just remember that if you get the GME refurbished it has a new 7 year life but only comes with a one warranty where a new item comes with a 7 year warranty.

But I am with the rest of you, my GME expires in about 12 months and I will just switch to the KTI - there is no question of quality etc as all this type of equipment MUST pass the relevant regulations etc.

@Synchro The reason I made my recent post was that from previous posts back in March, you were looking to see how I got on. I hope my findings help.

As for warranty - one would hope to never have to use warranty on such a device. Lets face it, when you find out it doesn't work, it's too late to worry about warranty.

to quote GME:

If you are purely driven on the economics then, dependant on the retail price of the competing brand, given that it has a 10 year battery life it is likely that the competing brand will be the more attractive option.
They are not interested in loosing business. KTi it is then. $225 delivered from ebay ATM with a voucher.

Quick quedtion i have for any of you is...

If i activate it what exactly happens? (Exact process?)

Cops alerted-depending where it is send immediate help???

Ps does it send a constant signal so you could walk to saftey or you need to stay put?

A bloke I know works for a contractor for air search and rescue based at Essendon airport here in Melbourne. He has responded to PLB beacons as far away as Kalgoorlie in WA. So as Steve says above I guess it depends on the situation and resources available at the time.

One big difference is that unlike the PLB
The Spot Gen3 will not contact Emergency
Services Directly. Your location and distress
Signal will first go to the GEOS International
Emergency Response Coordination Center
which is a private company specialised
Travel safety and security which is
located in the British Virgin Islands.

An Australia registered PLB will go through
the COSPAS-SARSAT worldwide operation
Centre which will direct it straight
trough to the Australian Maritime Safety
Authority AMSA.

From what I heard you can expect up 24 hours before help arrives in remote locations.
