Oil change intervals for diesel Prado

We have a new D4D Prado bought in February this year. The manual specifies 10,000k or 6 monthly service/oil change intervals. We had the vehicle serviced at 7,000k in August before the mileage target was reached, given that we were heading off on a trip that put 5000k on the vehicle. The vehicle has now done 16,000k. Should we now get the vehicle serviced again, or wait until February, in accordance with the sticker on the windscreen put there by the dealer at the previous service? As it stands I was surprise to find that the oil change interval was 10,000k as I thought diesels normally had oil changes every 5000k, or is this "old school" diesels?
Common sense suggests that more frequent oil changes would be beneficial in any event. Am I likely to be doing the engine any harm by waiting until February?

Some say yes, change the oil at 5000 km, some say you are wasting your money wiith the cleaner performance of the Common Rail Diesel and newer oils. I must confess, that I bought my Hilux the February before yours and it has 32,000km on it and I have stuck to the 10,000 km service.

Now that I have recently installed a performance Diesel chip, I think I will service it every 5,000 km on account of a bit more soot likely to end up in the oil.

My dealer had a standard 5,000 km service item for those that do want to do this. If I was facing a trip like yours, I'd probably change the oil and filter before you go as it has done 8,000 km since your last oil change (if I read right) and do the 20,000 km service (dropping the oil again) when you come back. That way you have piece of mind while travelling and you can fix any issues on your return.

2nd Rod's comments. I have the petrol Prado running Penrite oil and around 10,000KM I do the oil change with a filter change. The oil that is coming out is dark but not black. As my engine has done 230,000KM I ran a oil cleaner through the oil and all the build up has been remove (or most of it). Engine running smoother.

Keep an eye on the dipstick and if you start using oil, it is a good sign that you need a oil change.

As you put it 10,000k's or 6 Months, that is the norm for modern diesels, just remember that it is which ever comes first, so you need to change oil and filter if your doing 10,000k's before the 6 months or if your doing less than 10,000k's the oil/filter needs to be changed every 6 months.
It is not going to hurt the vehicle if you change the oil/filters more regularly, nor will it hurt it if you run over by a couple of thousand, just as long as it gets done.
On the flip side though, is if the vehicle is run in extreme conditions (outback roads, wet land areas, ect) it would be advisable to do a service every 5000k's.

I do mine every 5k. New oil and filter and drain the fuel filter.

Oil is still black when it comes out.

And its only an extra $80 or so dollars (DIY), so i think its worth it.

You can drain a diesel motor of its oil and then refill it, drain it again and it will be black, so diesel oil will always be black due to the soot.

I do the oil every 5000 and the filter every 10000, I think for the price to do it, it is better to be safe then sorry, whats $100 compared to a new engine.:)

The TD5 in the Disco has service intervals are 20,000ks for oil and filters, I do mine at 15,000ks but just because I want too.

I'm with Paul. The Prado doesn't hold that much oil. I drop mine every 5000 myself and every 10 000 it goes in for its normal service. Better to be safe than sorry.

Yes and No, if the oils black then the oils doing its job!

Mine (zd30) takes about 1500km to start getting real black. By 5000 its BLACK

If it goes black straight away, then you probably already have a sludge built up.

There is a additive that will help to remove the soot build up from oil and the galleries.

Heard good thinks about CEM's range of products, but only for newish engines (<200k km)

Old habits die hard, all the diesels on the farm were serviced after x amount of hours - I service my turbo intercooled 4.2 every 5000 KM, filters , oil the lot . she loves me and I love her, she is still a baby only 51000 KM on the clock .
