Off Roader

As some of you know I recently aquired a 2000 NM Pajero. I took it off road a couple of weeks ago, and it was great. Stock standard with road tyres and it still handled some of the trickier parts of Heathcote.

Problem is that I did some cosmetic damage to a few little bits and now the Mrs is annoyed.

I've decided to use the Pajero for sand, dirt tracks and touring mainly. Mrs has suggested that I buy an older 4X4 that I can use for more challenging off road fun, one where the scratches, dents and mud don't matter. Wife has actually said she doesn't care what I do to the old one as long as I don't damage "her" Paj anymore. God bless her!

I'd like some suggestions on what to buy. I'll have about $6000 to spend and I'm after something very capable off road, that I can do some serious mods to, diesel, and powerful enough to carry a load or tow something like a boat.

I have been considering an older Discovery Tdi.

Suggestions please.

Oh, or possibly a Suzuki sierra. Running costs are a consideration.

Either of these idea vehicles have any known issues or problems?

Consider the ute mate then u will have more uses for it. There are some good cheap utes for sale out there.

you could pick up a good gq patrol or 60series cruiser for $6000 suzuki will be a fun bush basher but you wont be towing much with it and the disco will hurt your hip pocket when it comes to repairs and services

Yep, an old GQ is best way to go! Tough, dependable! And when the boss stacks the Pajy, she can continue on in the Nissan like nothing happened!! She'll love it!

Can't go wrong with a GQ or a 60 series. Both tough old buses that will carry a fair load or tow any boat you can fit on a trailer.

i agree with gold rush for the money you want to spend a 60 or a gq would be the go, personaly id go with the turbo diesel option too, but they are always alot more expensive, so you might have to make due with petrol or gas one with a few more mod's

Thanks for the info fellas.

Looking at the cruiser option. Will have $6000 to spend (about mid year). Any good place to start looking to get an idea of what's out there?

Looking for a cruiser 1990 to 1995. Diesel of course!

Plenty out there. You'll probably end up spending more on the mods than its worth but that just means you can have more fun!

Can I just add, what ever you decide, think about the running cost and mods available. Crusiers a good choice but always more expensive than lux. Get a Lux in the Ute version, and you have the best of both worlds, Towing, offroad, plenty of cheap parts around. (Provided you get "non" IFS type).

A zook is very sweet, but not as many 2nd hand mod parts lying around yet.

Sweet deal you have there! - Don't forget you get another $950 from Kevin later too (with luck) :)

You call that an upgrade Croozer???:D:D

With $6000 to spend i would be looking at either the 60 series Cruiser or a gq patrol. Can't go wrong with either really, both will tow well and have heaps of available mods. If you were to go with a ute probably a 75 series or hilux. Wont get too much of a 75 though...

If I was looking just for a basher, where I'd look for a GQ.
Coil suspension is better off road than leaf and will cost less for ungraded/lifted springs.

I love the 60 but with the 2H and leaf springs, but I beleive the GQ would be a better off road machine.

However, if you can stretch the budget for a good 80, then you really would be getting up in the world.:)

Decided to actually go with a Disco. But how hard is it to find one with a decent service history??? Plenty around, very few that have been taken care of.
