I have a GPS logger as well. Great little gadget. Good to stash in the car when you drop it off for servicing so you can see what they've been up to on the test drive and ask the service manager why it was taken ona 20km test drive that included a stop at McDonalds.

Ahhhh ha hahaha.... I never thought of doing that.... geez I am glad my parents did not have a GPS logger when I was a teenager borrowing their car. They would have been horrified at the logged speeds :)

Now this has turned out to be an amusing "community minded" discussion, I really should sit dowm and work out how to upload and download all this stuff.
I know my location (Tas) won't help many, but I notice there is often discussion about camping spots for when people tour down here and I can point the way to a few beauties.
Thanks for the discussion being turned around.
Cheers

How hard is it to edit the output from a GPS logger?

Like rather than exporting the whole trip could I break it down into say track sections?

If you wish to convert the GPS file use GPS Babel. I only split the tracks if I was doing different regions on the one trip.

Not sure if that is the answer, GPS Babel seems to just convert one file format to another not really edit the track.

GPX files are just plain text and can be opened up in many different programs. My logger allows me to export the track as a GPX. If I wanted to divide the track into different sections I would just turn it off and back on. The program I use can merge those individual track into 1 single trip but I would have the ability to do individual sections.

I am going to try and edit a track in Google Earth, then export it and use GPS Babel to convert it to a GPX.

I'll let you know how I go.

Which program are you using to edit the tracks and what GPS do you have?
Me? I have a i-gotU GT-200, I use the @trip software to transfer tracks from the device to my PC, then I export the tracks. The @trip software can merge several tracks into a single "trip" and export it.

As for editing to split the tracks I don't have anything yet, I am playing with Google Earth but it is not as easy and simple as it should be. I can add to the tracks and draw where I want to but not subtract points.

I am going to look for a GPX editor.

Just looked at the device info and I haven't heard of it before. I find using the Garmin Mapsource the easiest program to use. I do have OziExplorer and find it is ok. When I do a trip and have multiple tracks for the one area I will create the track file. This will be displayed as multiple tracks on you software except when used with Goggle Earth. It maybe a limitation with you software.

Ok I'm going to ask then... I have ozi... but the demo.... so can I create/output track files... if so... how?

I have found how to create waypoints... but not get a track on the screen.... that I can save....

Maybe my first step is to get a decent map instead of the demo one ;)

I found a GPX editor here.

I downloaded the Caboolture to Woodford track from here but it looked funny because it had a track back on it. So I used the editor to split the track into three pieces, then deleted the middle bit and all the points. I then got the editor to join the 2 leftover peices into a single track.

Here is original track as a Google Earth file, and here is the altered version.

The GPX editor allows you to keep the tracks as 2 different ones so you can split them in to multi-segments.

Don't let my wife know but I just discovered how to turn my mobile into a GPS logger. I have a Nokia Navigator and you can download a free GPS logging app for it here.

They have the logging app for other phones as well.

My GPS logger has a 15 hour battery life, there is no way I would get that from the phone while it is running the GPS.

I'm keen to see how it goes, I d/l a program for geocaching, and it seems to not work so well with my phone.

Not that the software is to blame.... my Navman finds signal in like 10? 20? seconds, the phone takes at least 5min if not more.
