Noise when turning CV?

Hello, I have a 2003 Prado KZJ120 and when I turn I get a nice clicking kind of sound. I have been told that it is most likely my cv shafts. I was just wondering what do most people do/recommend do you replace the full shafts or just the outer joints?

Cheers, Raymond.

Parts for just the CV joints will be (or at least should be) cheaper than the full complete assembled shaft, however if your paying a mechanic to do the job then there would be a saving in labour cost to change out the full shaft. Depends on if your paying someone to do the job or doing it yourself on which way you go IMHO

Buy 2 brand new out of the box, one has had the fritz, the second will be rowing the same boat soon. Cheap brands can be as low as 100$ each, or, set of 2 for 160$, price vs quality may vary from that shown on the box? A set of name brand could be 400$ ?? still feasible in my opinion to just bin the old ones, bolt some new ones in, no mess no fuss.

I bought cheapies $160 The pair ( mitsi not Toyota) and sent the old ones off for rebuild came back new boots bearings etc greased $150. Working on the theory I'll get a few years out of the cheapies bang the rebuilt genuine in and that will see me out . ( I'm old )

One of mine started to make a click noise a few years back when i reversed on an odd angle, took them out (big job) and the grease looked bloody awful (too many river crossings) So i regreased and fitted new boots , decided to seal the boots with Sikaflex. Gee they have done some work over the years and still going...

That was a couple of years ago now and the front diff seal has started to leak, probably a 2 buck seal but couldn’t do it before the cv’s were done (soMy thinking is do one do the other) and another big job. Grrrrrr

This sounds like the route i will go. Found a set of cheap Cozza ones here https://www.onlineautoparts.com.au/products/ZPN-03552 will just put them in for now and keep the originals. I will eventually rebuild them and have them aside as spares if I need to do the job again, more junk in the shed wont hurt. Thanks for leading your knowledge

have you checked the front wheel bearings? the prado CV's shouldn't have any issues, but they do front wheel bearings if they have seen water
