Hey Josh,
In my view the x-trail is limited as a 4wd. My wife has had one since 2003 and I do have to say it is a great all round car and because it is so good is why I bought a new 06 Pathfinder. I have seen x-trails and Rav 4's do some great stuff off road, but it is more "seat of the pants" driving as opposed to controlled and safe. The x-trail's are good in the sand, but you still have to be careful of the electronics taking over and shutting down when they sense too much heat.
In summary, I'd say excellent all round car and great for light work like the beach or a run in a state park, but I wouldn't want to test it too much.
Cheers
Coxy
