Nissan Patrol 2.8 intercooled turbo diesel, 1998

Good Points
This is my 3rd Patrol.Tough and reliable, lasts forever! 208000 km, still on original brakepads. Big and roomy for the kids and all of our gear. Drives like a big car and handles the rough no worries. Other than new injectors, serviceing, mods and maybe a little damage, I hav'nt had to spend a cent. Also, Patrols don't change much so when you do something silly, 2nd hand parts are easily available.

Bad Points
Poor fuel economy.
2.8 a bit gutless towing anything over a couple of tonnes.
Typical Nissan front shudder.
Typical Nissan rattles inside after a few years.

What mods have you done?
75 mm. Dobinson springs, front.
75mm. Dobinsons, rear
TJM XGS shocks all round.
Roo Systems Chip and Dyno Tuned.
Safari Snorkel.
3 " Turbo dump
2.5" straight through system.
Cargo barrier.
Roof console with UHF & CB. (wonder if CB still works?)
Sunrasias & 255/85-16 BFG M/T's
ARB steel Bullbar.
Rallye 4000 Driving lights.
Dual battery system on car and 1 x 500 AH on the camper trailer.
2 Fridge points & 1 cig point in back. 5 cig points up front.
2 waecos 50 lt.
Turbo timer.
GPS.
Reverse/worklight on rear.
120x75/4 mm rhs rear bar with LED's. WILL NOT bend!
Custom built rear drawers

What mods are on the list to do?
V8 turbo diesel.
Reshim the LSD
front Air Locker.
fridge slide for the Waeco.

Why did you buy this vehicle?
1. As mentioned above. 3rd Patrol. Have to pry my lifeless body out of it!
2. It did'nt have a Toyota badge on the front!

How often do you go offroad?
At least monthly, most of the year.

What will your next vehicle be?
Guess!

How many toyoya's have you owned?

EGR has been blocked for ages. Bonnet scoop, I reckon pointless. The scoop works fine at low speeds and at cruising speeds on roads, I really don't need more "performance".

Hows did you find the difference with blocked EGR?

Some much needed low end torque?

Bonnet scoop from ARE is potentially worth 1 to 2 L/100km, increases stock intercooler efficiency by 74%.

I know you run the with that fan on but obove about 15kmh the fan does very little.

Sadly the Patrol bonnet scoop doesn't actually work at anythign above about ~40kmh.

Food for thought anyway.

Cheers

Justin

Oils good, waters good, just dissapearing. When the water gets low, it starts to warm up under boost. The probs began on the way to middle earth. It got a little warm (never been HOT!) 1/2 way there so we changed the thermostat. That worked for a month or so then it started to do it again. So I replaced the radiator and that fixed the problam,,,sorta. Ever since, it's used a few cups of water every few weeks. On the way back from Amamoor, it sucked up about 8 liters on the way back.

SO, heads comin off, full service on the head, manifolds go in the acid, new Pyrometer, boost guage, water temp guage, finish the EGR block off, maybe a datch can, fix the IP and off to the dyno again. (It's not quite right yet. experimental.)

I don't mind so much. I've had it 8 years and never spent a cent on mechanical repairs. Had to happen eventually with the floggin it gets! Besides, 100% tax deductble. I could think of worse things to fix!!!

Must be a 2.8 thing hey - once they go in the shop they stay there :rolleyes:

At least you can drive "macca's" one.............

Supose your not up for a run this weekend - shame would have been good to do some harder tracks on the flip side we won't have to fix your flat tyres ;);)

Hey frosty, just read your whole post. Gotta love the mighty 2.8s.
The heads do go, and with the recent power upgrade and all original head it was a even bet.
But they love to rev and rev.....overtaking a 4.2 owner with the tacho swinging all the way round is fun...

You really do know how to drive them though to get the most from it.

Have tried some chemtech recently with 2 stroke in the diesel, and it's smoother and more powerful ..

Let us know how she goes after the mini-rebuild.

Had the old girl back a few weeks now. No differance in performance. It still needs to go back on the dyno. A bit rich and the boost may be a bit high. Going up tamborine mtn, the temp guage started to move a bit high. First time it's ever moved, except for the blown head gasket. Might consider a Radiator upgrade?? Pity really, I only put a new one in it after the factory one clogged and caused the head gasket to weep.

All goin good and still eatin Marks Ipod Prado!! That's the most important thing!!!!

Don't trust the gen Nissan temp guage. Even at 3/4 it's only around 100c or so which is fine for a system under pressure with coolant.
Going to get myself a digital temp guage with alarm for around $130 from brisvagas to tell me what really going on when I go on the long hill climbs in hotter days.
