New Memory Map for All

"There are too many 'gazetted' old cobb and co tracks etc that just don't exist anymore which are still shown on Hema and every other map. I wouldn't trust a computer to plan a route unless I wanted to get into trouble." -- that is the kind of thing I was referring to when I stipulated "in an acceptable manner". It's one thing for an app to notionally say "we support auto routing" and another for it to actually work.

ExplorOz's EOTopo maps, for example, is full of inaccessible or no-longer-even-existing roads.

It seems like the Hema raster maps have a decent amount of human curation applied to them.

I've tried using it on 2 Android devices that already have the old Memory Map plus the Hema Australia and NSW Topo maps all activated and it won't use the maps. For a start, it won't use them from the same location as the old Memory Map, and if I try and copy them through the app it throws an error and doesn't copy. Did you do anything special to get your existing maps to work?
Same here - I am using a PC running Windows 11 and it won't copy or access the maps I already have saved on my computer.

I think I will just stick to Oziexplorer.

What apps are there that support "auto routing" (and have it actually work in an acceptable manner) in non-urban settings?
Google maps with areas downloaded for offline use. Nothing else comes close. For Android anyway.

maps.me amongst others. Personally I wouldn't leave before I was sure of where I was going in a non urban setting. There are too many 'gazetted' old cobb and co tracks etc that just don't exist anymore which are still shown on Hema and every other map. I wouldn't trust a computer to plan a route unless I wanted to get into trouble.
Yes, I agree with you in part, but I always plan my routes from my computer at home before I go. There are many ways these days to prove whether roads/track still exists or not. If I want to create a Route of where I plan to go, I do so via Garmin Basecamp as it is quite easy and it's what I'm used to. I can also find Tracklog GPX files off the Internet of the areas I'm wanting to travel to & then confirm that the gpx file is real and not made up and then paste them into my planned route to create an overall gpx file of my proposed Trip. I then upload this gpx file into my Garmin GPS & GPS Apps on my iPad.

You can also create routes (to a point) on Google Maps &/or Google Earth and then convert the file into a GPX format and upload it to your devices.

Regarding Apps that auto-route to the actual road - I've never really tried this at home as I just find Basecamp quick and easy. I did try to do an auto-route once via one of the iPad Apps that I use while I was on one of my trips but found that you needed Cell Service for this to work. I just ended up creating the alternative route on my Garmin GPS at the time.

On old Ozi Explorer one of its coolest features was the ability to play an audio file at a waypoint. If you had a sound file saying turn left or turn right etc, you could tack it on to a waypoint during the planning so that the pc or tablet would tell you to do something at a point on the route. Handy if you don't want to keep your eyes on the map. So that's old fashion turn by turn.

Memory Map will do the same thing under waypoint properties. It can play a sound or open a file - like a PDF description of the place when you approach or depart a place. I found it to be more annoying than anything else. If you change your route it gives the wrong directions and it wont adapt on the fly. Others may find it useful.

Oh yeh, good point. That is available on iOS devices too. I don't think Google Maps shows all the roads in remote locations though, but certainly useful in a lot of situations.

Not knowing much about HEMA products...

If HEMA update their 4WD Maps on their App, will this flow through to the HEMA Maps that you can purchase/run on the Memory Maps Apps??

If u already have the Hema 4WD Maps App - Is there a way to have these maps displayed onto the Memory Map App?

The Hema updates usually come throuh on MM annually as a whole upgrade. It's usually 50% off.

This article say syou can do it the other way around. https://kb.hemamaps.com/hema-4wd-ma...format-maps-onto-my-ipad-for-use-with-the-app

I think if you log in on your Hema it is to the MM account.

So log in from the MM home page and you shoudl see the maps ready for activation. There may be some livence restrictions but I think it woudl work.

Memory-Map have put up the 2022 Hema maps, $99 or $49 for upgrade. The 2022 update is the same as the Hema 4WD app update just published for free, so effectively you are paying a $49 annual subscription for Memory-Map as opposed to a "once of" $99 for the Hema 4WD app.

Good to know

Does anyone know how much the HEMA Maps change per year?

Is it a yearly thing or every few years that they update their maps?

I guess if the changes are minimal, then there might not be the need to upgrade every year...?

Kevin.

Can you please point me to somewhere that says updates are free? They do say that when you buy the Hema 4x4 App, you get the maps for free and there is no annual licence, but I can't see where you get unlimited free annual upgrades. The licence systems actually uses Memory maps back end so it would be interesting so see if buying them through Hema gives you different licences and an unlimited free upgrade. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/4wd-maps-offline-topo-maps/id465639977 note that link is in USD.

I’ve had the Hema 4WD app since it came out, at least 10 years. In that time there have been numerous free map updates. I spoke to a Hema rep, around the time I purchased the app, at a 4WD show & he said that map updates would be free. Obviously, this could change. If I had gone down the Memory-Map path & purchased the Hema map set from Memory-Map when I first got the Hema 4WD app, the initial cost would have been the same, but I would have been paying $49 for each annual map update. It is important to note that the Hema “updates “ also occasionally include new maps.

Thanks Kevin. Interesting how they are so different. Have you ever purchased other maps on Hema?

Funny you should mention that. I purchased a NT topo map thru the Hema app from Memory-Map digital store some years ago when we went to work up in Litchfield NP. At some point Memory-Map deleted the map & I have lost it.
