I use external storage ( on Hema and Memory Map) for Android.

Old Hema app or the new 4x4 Explorer App? Because this is the response I got from Hema about Hema 4x4 Explorer..

Hi folks, newbie here.
Thanks for the discussion. Hopped into this forum wondering what others use as a nav app.

Have been using the Hema explorer app since 2014. To me, each successive upgrade from hema just robbed the app of it's zoom features. (The cynic in me suggests that hema worked out that they could make more money from a subscription based app rather than an outright purchase so they slowly rendered the explorer app as worthless piece of rubbish).

So being determined not to play their game, I have downloaded the MM app.
Am I correct in thinking that the hema explorer basemaps are the only ones you can use offline?

Thanks again for the topic.

Ahh it could be the old one I think. I hardly got the new one off the ground. But try USB. I have an idea I got something working on USB but not SD.

No that's the new 4x4 explorer app.
While the old explorer app had the ability to store maps on an sd card, good old hema again...removed that ability in the last upgrade.
MM maps went straight to sd card, didn't even ask.

For whats its worth, despite some misconceptions earlier, after half a day getting used to MM I'm happy with the decision to move from hema.

Thx also boobook for the heads up...I wouldn't have even known about it otherwise.

Using android tab with sd card so have a bit of space to bulk download. Will bulk download the qld hema topo for general nav unless antone has a better suggestion.

Hey Tony,
I'm enjoying getting to know the basic ops of MM. One question if I may.
I've got the Qld topo maps on trial and have downloaded them to my device. I'm guessing that even though they're on my device, I
won't be able to access them through MM app once the trial period is over.
Cheers Brendan

When you get a licenced map on a trial like the Qld and Hema ones, it works fine till the trial period is over. At that point, the maps still stay in your device and you can still access / see them, but they are pixelated and pretty much unreadable.

They will stay on your device forever. If you don't want them, delete them, if you do want them and pay the licence fee online or in the map shop icon, the pixelation disappears and the maps are clear again. :)

I much prefer the old one, but the new one has some advantages.

It really is slowly getting better with the contour lines coming back (finally).

Sometimes the classics are cooler than some new pieces. Although it all depends on personal perception.

Well.. just back from a 6000klm road trip that took in the Anne Beadell, Holland Track and many little side tracks along the way.

ExplorOz Traveller was superb for the trip, the POI database was a major contributor to trip success. I did fire up the new Hema App a few times along the journey but it was a complete joke every time, such little detail, such poor maps, and so few POIs.

Camel Chase on the Anne Beadell - you can get a peek of ExplorOz Traveller running on the Tablet..

Everyone I know with the explore oz traveller raves about it. I think Hema have some competition on their hand. As the EO POI is user uploaded, it will only get better with time. Some of the EO map detail I've seen is lacking, but then again, I've seen a lot of hema data removed from newer maps too. One day someone will make a killer map.

They've gone from bad to worse. I'm not even sure what the maps is supposed to do. Is it an off road map, or a new advertising tool for caravan parks and pie shops? It is littered with "helpful" business icons that just get in the way. Meanwhile I can't even find the map I want. I don't even know what maps are on it, in the cloud, online, offline or not accessed yet.

And after all that it keeps crashing!

USELESS P.O.S.

They now have
The 4wd app ( Memory Map and I love that),
HemaX
Hema Explorer
Hema 4x4 Explorer
Hema Camper x
Hema Cloud Explorer.
Hema HX1 navigator

6 apps that overlap but are used differently, and don't talk to each other, and all but one are unusable and riddled with bugs.

Best to use none. Talk about a brand trashing it's self.
To simplify this to my knowledge of tinkering with the apps "behind the scenes", it's as follows:

The Hema HX-1 Navigator uses the same (but modified skin) app as Hema Explorer.
The Camper X and Hema 4x4 Explorer use the same new backend server, whereas the Explorer uses a different one.

The next released physical GPS (HX-2) will use the new Hema 4x4 Explorer app, probably reskinned again. It will contain the premium maps ready for you to download.

The HX-2 stuff above is speculation but I'm 99% certain that's how it is. Happy to provide proof by PM of needed.

I have Hema 4x4 and all my track logs are on my iPad. I recently changed iPads. What is the easiest way to get all my old track data over to my new one?
I don’t have an account as such with them as never needed it to date
