A couple of questions in regards to putting new tyres on my GU Patrol. Firstly the current tyres are 265/70/R16, can I go to 275s on the Patrol rim with no dramas and is this cm of extra width going to give me any advantage?

Secondly I am putting ATs on and was set on the BFG AT as the best option, I have come across however a set of silverstone AT 117 which claim to replicate the tread pattern of the BFG, give the same kind of mileage and are about 100 dollars per tyre cheaper. Has anyone had any experience with these tyres or any other silverstone product?

I aiming for 80-90,000 kays from my Bf's, so I reckon they are a great tyre. The neighbour just put a set
of Silverstones on in that pattern, will be interesting to see mileage.
I would also look at going for 265/75/R16 rather than 275's, a much more common size.
The wider tyre will give an advantage in some situations-more rubber on the ground- but may increase
fuel consumption- probably not by much, not sure of figures to be honest.

Thanks for the feedback Jok, I was all but sold on the BFG until these silverstones came up in the same tread pattern. I did however see a snippet from an article in 4wd monthly today that was a comparison of 14 popular ATs, The silverststone's did not fair well in the puncture test. Would love to see the whole comparison as the bit I saw was in a coopers add and was obviously very biased towards the coopers. For once in my life I am not going to buy tyres based on price alone so I want to do my research and get the best value for my buck.

Good thinking, Usually, as we all know, cheapest is going to bite you somehow! Not always, but often. You'll get good value out of the BFG's, in the long run. That may be tire wear or side wall strength or traction. I use BFG's MT in the bush and beach and Bridgestone Duellers A/T on the road. I get good milage out the Bridgy's and strength and traction from the BFG's.
And stick with "normal sizes" for ordinary tyres. HEAPS cheaper than something a bit different.

Confused now??

Always confused:eek:, think i will get the BFGs though, doesnt matter who i talk to I dont hear a bad word about them, at the end of the day they are probably the most important peice of equipment on the car so why scrimp on something that will keep you safe.

I have heard the Silverstones are a copy of the old BFG and are only 2 ply walls instead of 3

Just for information sake, I am just about to clock up 100,000 km on my BFG AT's (LT version) but although they appear to have a good amount of meat left I can feel them break traction on tar quite easily at the moment and on gravel roads the will slip or spin quite easily too.

If you can, ALWAYS go for a 3 ply wall!! Will save heaps in the end!! I'll post a good example shortly. Maybe??

Good info on the ply of the walls, thats the sort of help I need, am pretty much sold on the BFG in the LT version, just got to wait for KRudd to give me the coin now. I love stimulating the economy.

I have just put a new set of shoes (or gimboots) on my 80 series. I ran BFG A/T's on my Paj until i sold her and found them great. When i went looking for new tyres for the 80 I had to let the Goodies slide this time as BFG have lifted there prices a fair bit. Cooper and Mickey T's where about the same price. I chose the 285/75/16 Mickey T's MTZ at about $360 a tyre there still expensive but the same size BFG M/T where about $400. I havn't heard any bad reports on the MTZ's and so far (1 week) i'm happy with them.
