My Awning Extension

Been using the quiet time to do some modifications to my camp set up.

I have a 2 x 2.5m awning and when I camp I have an awning tent that fits under it to give me shelter and protection from bugs etc but I didn't have anywhere to sit in shade or set up my cooking gear etc so I decided to use this quite time to modify the awning.

I had a 2.5 x 3m side wall for the awning but these are designed to be pegged into the ground, so they don't offer any more room as such.

So I got a mate of mine who is an Upholsterer to put a zip on the side of the awning and the wall and some eyelets at the other end and I made up a frame from poles to make an awning extension.

I still have a couple of modifications to do but overall I am happy with the result (normally my attempts at DIY turn to sh!t ;) ;) ) and look forward to getting out there and camping.

Looks great - How do you get on with the Awning Tent in the rain with the flat roof?
(Looks like a great "Dog House" for when your in trouble)

Ive used an awning tent for my camping for a few years now.
The awning tent has its own roof.
The actual awning, when you set it up, have it so it has a bit of fall and preferably away from the main entry to the tent

Happy Easter to all you 4x4er's. You can also buy these now. The side walls are a attached separately if you don't want to use them. Material is the nylon tent type so light in weight and space. Temped to buy but really would be a pain to set up each time you moved your vehicle. https://23zero.com.au/product/ramblers-den/ . There's also this simple set up for the solo traveller and his swag. A bit expensive thou ,paying for the name at just under $200 http://www.ironman4x4.com/products/...97125-f4d3-490f-b7e9-a810b1572f0b/awning-xtra . My set up.Usually i use an envelope swag. Wall rolls up with the awning.

Great set up , my only issue with these types of set ups is its a pita if you want to drive anywhere . I use a 2.5 X 3m awning only (no tent) which is great for shelter but still a pain if you are staying more than 1 night at a site . If staying a few days I take the 3m X 3m Oztent gazebo and leave it set up for my swag , can drive off to get firewood etc with no issues .

Is it self standing if you need to drive somewhere?

I made my awning/awning tent able to be freestanding, since then there have been commercial brackets made, non available at the time that I know off.

The flat roof is a definite issue, snow/rain etc does collect in the awning but I usually just drop 1 corner pole.

It is a bit of work though, so I am now looking at an Oztent RV4 or 5 or similar in the near future.

Nice set up Karl. I can see it working well if camped in the one spot for a few nights. However, I am way too lazy to erect that many poles and ropes for a one or two night stop. (Mind you, no more work than erecting a tent I know; but normally/good weather I'd just roll out the swag.)
The awnings are great for adding that extra layer of water-proofing when nasty conditions are forecast. Following snap from a 2017 camp at Dangars Falls. Sorry about the jocks drying on the spotlight!

Yeah that is one thing I am looking at - thinking of adding another spreader bar in the middle.

The other option is that I drop the end down when it is raining so it slops down to the rear of the vehicle.

Either way, it is better than what I had before :)

Thanks and no issues with the jocks - if you look carefully you may just be able to make out a set of SHMBO undies on the clothes line behind the Navara :)

I sent over 20 years in the Army so setting up and pulling down tents isn't really an issue as I have done it so many times :)

So far, setting up from rolling out the awning to what it is there took me about 20 mins, so it isn't that bad.

If I had the money I would have preferred an Oztent RV 3/4/5 rather than the awning tent but I got it on sale at Supercheap a year ago for about $75 and at Xmas picked up the side wall for $30 - so it was a bit cheaper than an Oztent. To get the zipper done (plus other work) cost me about $150 and I had all the poles.

Still have to tweak it a bit but should work well for what I want.

Both the awning tent and the extension are Ridge Ryder from Supercheap.

That's the better configuration the main door been towards the rear of the vehicle . Supercentre door is straight out from the vehicle ,trip over guy ropes to get a beer as most have there fridges are in rear of vehicle. An Oztent RV 2/3/4 would be ideal of the side awning if you want to move but to bulky for me and best suited to a flat platform rack.

With the awning tent from supercenter i use the 2.5x2.5 awning, and put an extra pole in to hold the tent ... I drilled two holes 1 each end .. so the pole pins wouldn't move/slip out and just used walls two walls to help keep the awning in place.
I will try and find some photos...
